Mobula rays leap out of the water, often spinning and slapping down loudly, in a behavior that’s one of the most spectacular and mysterious displays in the ocean. Though the exact reasons are still debated, scientists and observers generally agree on several likely explanations. They leap most often during spring and summer, which aligns with mating season and plankton blooms. Leaping is often recorded during twilight or nighttime hours, though it also happens during the day. Leaping increases when hundreds or even thousands gather, especially in places like the Sea of Cortez (Baja California Sur) Males may leap to attract females or compete with rivals. The sound and splash could signal fitness or dominance. You’ll sometimes see multiple rays leaping in succession, possibly part of a courtship ritual. Leaping and crashing down may help dislodge parasites, like copepods and flatworms. The acoustic shock of the splash might help coordinate group movement or warn others. Rays are also highly social so a sudden splash could function like a signal in a fluid school. Some scientists believe mobulas might leap for stimulation or play, especially juveniles.
