GLThe leatherback sea turtle is the largest turtle in the world, growing to more than 6.5 feet (two meters) in length and weighing up to 2,000 pounds (900 kilograms). They are the only species of sea turtle that lack scales and a hard shell. They are named for their tough rubbery skin and have existed in their current form since the age of the dinosaurs. Where do They Live? Leatherbacks occur in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans. Nesting beaches are primarily located in tropical latitudes around the world. Globally, the largest remaining nesting aggregations are found in Trinidad and Tobago, West-Indies (Northwest Atlantic) and Gabon, Africa (Southeast Atlantic). Nesting in the United States usually occurs in Florida, Puerto Rico and St. Croix (U.S. Virgin Islands). They lay typically less than 100 eggs each time. Leatherbacks are also the Deepest-Diving Turtle, Capable of reaching depths of close to 4,000 feet (1.200m).
