Old vs. New @mudtools Sponge — Can they both handle the job? Let’s find out. 😮 Here’s a glimpse into one of my favourite parts of the process of making these tabelwares: Glaze cleanup. I start by brushing coloured glaze over the imprinted/carved design, then slowly wipe it back—leaving pigment only in the inlaid areas. Once it’s just right, a layer of clear glaze is applied over the top, and it’s back into the kiln for a #cone10 firing. The result? Crisp, white porcelain with super sharp lines and rich, embedded colour. 💛 The real MVP here: my trusty white Mudtools sponge. The old one you see? It’s at least 5–8 years old, and still going strong—even after years of glaze wiping. The yellow potters sponge is great for broad cleanup, but for precision work, nothing beats the soft white mudtools sponge. It’s important to catch the bowl at the perfect point when the bowl is neither too wet or too dry…when it’s like a knife in cold butter. Making a woodfired fluted bowl! After throwing this bowl from 6 pounds of @tuckers.pottery dark stoneware, I fluted the upper section with a @mudtools U-shaped Drag Tool and trimmed the exterior to mirror the curved interior. Once bisque-fired, I further refined the surfaces/edges using @diamondcoretools sanding pads/paper ✨ I fired this bowl upside-down near the fire box of the @theokidokistudio anagama! This firing involved stoking the kiln for over 100 hours with a team of fellow potters from @gasworksnyc. The woodfiring process is full of so much beauty to observe: undulating flames, flying sparks, the crackle of burning wood, the ever-changing atmosphere inside the kiln, and shifting weather patterns. Thanks again to @asartoriusceramics, @daisy_goldstein, and @sarahfoxpottery for helping make this firing possible. I love how this bowl turned out! The glittery interior is full of numerous crystals, swirling wood ash, and dramatic flashing. The glowing/reflective quality of the circular wad mark reminds me of an eclipse! The exterior is more subtle, with some lovely textured wood ash surfaces and gradients of burgundy flashing. Unfortunately, a tiny hairline crack formed through the center of this piece, which makes it more sculptural than intended since the bowl can’t hold water. I believe the crack emerged due to some variations in wall thickness near the base of the form. I’m excited to make more fluted bowls in the coming months! A bit more about the Mudtools Wide Mouth Dragtool: this tool is made from high carbon steel, is tempered for durability, and is engineered as a double-sided tool with one end to cut a wider flute. It’s my favorite fluting tool!
