Hereโ€™s what most people donโ€™t know: chronic constipation in women is rarely just about not drinking enough water. It can be a sign of low progesterone, sluggish thyroid function, dysbiosis in the gut, or simply not enough of the right kind of fibre. And thatโ€™s where kiwi fruit comes in- Two kiwis. Thatโ€™s it. I actually have a feeling that this mom has a similar mindset around food as me, after seeing some of her responses in the comments, but I know thereโ€™s other parents out there who have more set beliefs. Weight fluctuations occur on a regular basis for all clients, and this can negatively affect our clients mood so it is super important for us to recognise that weight fluctuations are perfectly normal ๐ŸŽฏ Hereโ€™s why? โคต๏ธ 1๏ธโƒฃHormones in the lead up to our time of month ๐Ÿฉธ levels of both oestrogen and progesterone go up significantly in the weeks before our period which can cause water retention. 2๏ธโƒฃSleep, did you know that poor sleep quality has been repeatedly linked to weight gain? ๐Ÿคฏ generally poor sleep quality leads to higher stress levels. 3๏ธโƒฃMeal higher in Salt may cause your body to retain water, the same goes for meals higher in Carbohydrates ๐Ÿง‚๐Ÿฅ” So a spike in weight may occur until the bloat subsides. 4๏ธโƒฃSlow bowel movement, if you are constipated the weight of the stool in your body may cause an increase on the number on the scales โš–๏ธ 5๏ธโƒฃStress produces a hormone called Cortisol and excess of this hormone may increase water weight/retention. (And just say no to statins ๐Ÿšซ) Often folks donโ€™t want to pay for functional testing - and in my practice you donโ€™t have to, because we can tell a tremendous amount from just your standard labs that your family doc runs. One of the most important is a metabolic marker from your lipid panel. And psssst it isnโ€™t total cholesterol. Itโ€™s your: Triglycerides / HDL ratio Why? ๐Ÿค” Well your Triglycerides rise when your liver is converting excess sugar into fat and your HDL falls when your insulin stays high. So the ratio of Triglycerides/ HDL becomes a window into your insulin sensitivity or insulin resistance โ€” years before other markers. And 1/10 of functional la testing. So get out your most recent labs. Look for triglycerides and HDL. Divide triglycerides by HDL and you will get a number. If your number is < 1 = metabolically flexible ๐Ÿ”ฅ (GOAAL!) 1โ€“2 = healthy 2โ€“3 = insulin resistance 3 = metabolic dysfunction 5 + = severe cardiovascular risk (So statins change the lab numbers but not the risk) You can have โ€œhigh LDLโ€ and be metabolically healthyโ€ฆ and you can with โ€œnormal cholesterolโ€ can be severely insulin resistant and have very high cardiovascular risk. I would read Healing Pelvic Pain by Dr Peta Wright Research shows that pain education can actually improve pain scores by reducing fear, shifting beliefs around pain, and calming nervous system sensitisation. When you understand that pain doesnโ€™t always equal damage, the brain becomes less protective, which can reduce the intensity of pain signals over time. (Canโ€™t not recommend this book enough!) 2. I would seek multidisciplinary care Physiotherapist, therapist and naturopath. Endometriosis isnโ€™t always a pain equals severity condition. You can have stage 1 with significant pain, or stage 4 with very little. That gap tells us lesion growth alone doesnโ€™t explain symptoms, something else is driving the pain. Whether itโ€™s structural, nervous system, trauma-related, inflammatory, or dietary triggers working with multiple practitioners allows you to address the full picture and manage pelvic pain long term. 3. I would use supportive tools like castor oil packs (except during my bleed) Castor oil contains ricinoleic acid, a fatty acid that can penetrate the skin deeply, helping to soften masses and blockages while increasing blood flow. This action may help your body flush out obstructions and adhesions. If you donโ€™t know where to start, Iโ€™d love to help. Iโ€™m in student clinic until September, based in Brisbane or available via Telehealth.
