Your thoughts become your mantra—so we must train them wisely. Each time you catch yourself in a negative thought loop, write it down using the “I am thinking…” method. Then label the thought: Is it worry? Anxiety? Prediction? Past-based fear? Comparison? Self-judgment? Jealousy? Once labeled, the intensity of that negative thought automatically starts decreasing. Physically putting a thought in something helps your brain to let it go 6. realise it’s just a thought. You don’t have to believe it. 7. ask the thought questions. Like is it true? 8. Give the thought resilience. So if you’re saying I’m not good enough, add ‘yet’ or ‘but I’m trying’ These are some very effective ways to start rewiring the negative thoughts. Shifting our mindset involves challenging negative or unhelpful thoughts (cognitive distortions) and replacing them with more balanced and constructive thoughts. This process helps individuals reinterpret situations more rationally, reducing stress and negative emotional responses. Because our thoughts influence how we feel and ultimately act, mindset shifts can help us regulate our emotions and get out of a state of paralysis. In cognitive behavioural therapy, we often use the ABC model (Activating event, Beliefs, Consequences) to illustrate how our beliefs about an event influence our emotional and behavioral responses. These mindset shifts target the ‘B’ (Beliefs) part of the model, encouraging more adaptive and constructive beliefs about oneself, situations, or the world, which in turn affect emotional and behavioral outcomes. In addition, cognitive reframing fosters a sense of self-efficacy by encouraging us to perceive challenges as opportunities for growth. Your mind can be a real jerk sometimes… Here’s the hard truth: Thoughts are not facts. We listen to our thoughts WAY too often. We give them too much weight when they’re trying to tear us down, or when we’ve defaulted into self-defeatist thinking patterns that try to derail us we accept those thoughts without question. And the thing is, once we’ve accepted a cognitive distortion, we’re more likely to create it in our reality because it shapes how we think, what we feel and then what we do. In this way, it becomes self-fulfilling. This is why it’s so important to be challenging our thoughts when we notice any cognitive distortions arise, whether we’re thinking in extremes (polarization), catastrophizing and blowing things out of proportion orpersonalizing and blaming ourselves for things we were not responsible for. To challenge your thoughts in the moment, work through these steps to encourage greater rationality: 1️⃣ Look at the evidence… What has happened? Focus on facts only. 2️⃣ Understand your appraisal. How have you interpret this? What conclusions have you drawn?. 3️⃣ Ask yourself: How can I get a more balanced view? What’s another way of looking at this? 4️⃣ Come up with counter arguments. This can help you return to a more rational state.
