About 20-30 minutes before you go to bed, do something that feels calming and relaxing. Even if it’s something as simple as listening to soothing music while closing your eyes. ➡️ Do a “brain dump”. Write down all of your worries before you lay down to go to sleep. You don’t need to solve all of your worries- you just need to allow your mind to take a break from ruminating on them ➡️ Use visualization. Imagine a calming/relaxing or safe place or person and envision it in as much detail as possible. Take your mind to a place that feels comforting ➡️ Use touch for self-soothing. Wrap your arms around you as if you’re giving yourself a hug, rub your arms up and down, or gently caress your arm or your hand. Give it a go and I bet you will struggle to open your eyes by the time you get to 1!! If you’re really struggling to get to sleep consistently (on a nightly basis) then this is a good sign your cortisol is still really high when you are trying to go to sleep. If that’s the case, I HIGHLY recommend moving your body for a few minutes before bed, literally just get up move and shake whatever way feels good - this down regulates your cortisol + adrenaline levels and puts your body in a parasympathetic resting state (!!) Pair these two tools together for extra sleepy bonus points 🙂‍↕️
