I have big feelings about this ok 😅🤣 If you are struggling with an early arm bend, you’re pulling the bar up with your arms instead of relying on your legs to move the bar. ⬆️Your legs job is to move the bar up ⬇️Your arms job is to move your body down. If you yank the bar up like that, you can’t pull yourself down. High pulls have a place, but if you’re pulling early and pulling the bar up instead of moving yourself down, the high pull is just reinforcing the wrong positions. Instead, focus on finishing the bar with your shoulders. You’ll most likely have a slight bend in the arm because of the vertical momentum of the bar, but it’s not a big pull up. When you go to do a snatch, whether it’s a power or a squat, focus on the arms and legs, extending together, and then bending together to move yourself into the catch position. 👉🏻What are your thoughts? How I help my athletes fix the most common fault I see in oly lifting: an early arm pull 🏋️ For the most part, I coach athletes who already have some prior experience with oly lifts, And because this habit is so easy to pick up, I see it ALL the time. Pulling your arms too early feels like the ‘right’ thing to do and so gets engrained early on, particularly when athletes come from a class setting The problem with this habit is that it seriously limits lifting potential later down the line. So, we break the movement down. Firstly, we really focus on trying to remove all tension from the arms at the start of the lift by shaking them out. Think cooked noodles, completely floppy. 🍜 Next, we segment the movement into three distinct lifts each progressing in difficulty. Hip Clean Pull Hang Clean Pull Clean Pull Once these are looking smooth we progress once more, by adding the turnover and start again. So this time we go: Hip Clean Hang Clean Clean By moving progressively and deliberately through this drill, we can reinforce the correct movement pattern and really learn how to use our legs to generate the power, instead of relying on our upper body! ❌ Most people make the super common mistake of using olympic lifts when they want to train power. 🎯 There is nothing wrong with them. If you want to learn them for fun, that’s awesome. ⚖️ But for the average person I usually find that they aren’t the best exercise for training power with a barbell. 🧠 They are complex, take time to learn, and are more unsafe than other more effective methods (like these trap bar jumps). 🔄 Plus, as you become more skilled at OLY lifting, you start to become better at moving the bar slower with more weight on it and catching it with more skill in a deeper position. 📉 This means as you get better, you shift the exercise from more of a power to more of a strength movement. 🐇 But I digress, I could go down that rabbit hole for another 500 words. ✅ You want the most simple, effective, reliable and consistent, safe, and easy exercise to create the result. 🤸 And when we are talking about power, using OLY lifts is like learning a standing double back flip for the purpose of jumping higher. 🚫 There are just better ways to get the adaptation you want. 💬 Anyway, what do you think?
