Everyone talks about taper week like it’s some magic switch. It isn’t. If you want to peak at the right time, that work starts weeks or MONTHS earlier. Getting your training right means knowing you CANNOT be peaking all year. This is the most common misconception that age groupers miss; we think we should be on this linear train of improvement all year every year. The process is simple. Build fitness super early (build your base way earlier than you think). Sharpen in the race ready phase. Rest last so that you taper and peak at race time. That order does not change. Most athletes miss the peak because they’re too casual about their base and then panic. They don’t build a solid foundation, then try to add intensity too late. They chase big sessions. Consistency beats hero sessions. One great workout never creates a peak. A block of steady training, well timed intensity, and planned recovery does. The biggest mistake is thinking peaking is about doing something special. It’s not, it’s about trusting the process throughout the year and not having unrealistic expectations of maintaining form. Peak timing is not luck.

I’ve seen people who are insanely disciplined… and still stuck. Grinding. Training hard. Working nonstop. And going nowhere. Effort is required, no question. But alignment matters. You can train like a bodybuilder, hit your macros, and still get arm pump in three laps. Because effort in the wrong direction is just wasted energy. The specificity of your training matters. Train for your dirt bike not your ego.

To sum things up, I live for this. The grind, the early mornings and the late nights. How’s prep going? I enjoy the process more than the result. I will push myself to every limit that I need to in order to achieve that result. But the process has to occur first.

Perfectionism feels productive. It isn’t. Feeling as though executing at 100% is the magic elixir to your wildest goals is a flawed approach. Stop & ask yourself “what will it feel like if I actually achieve what I set out to achieve?”. When I’m being honest with myself my answer is simple… More. So why does prep have to be flawless when we’re driven to be better anyway? I’ve gone off script more than ever in this 50km prep. And guess what? I’m still the best runner I’ve ever been & I’m 4 weeks out. Feeling conflicted just means you care. And that’s what’s going to drag you out of the pain cave on race day 🤙🏻
