A-Z OF TYPES OF FABRIC PRINTS🧶🪡 Some of these are patterns, some are fabrics or textiles, some are dyeing techniques, and a few are closely related but region-specific. This video is meant to help you visually understand them rather than box them into strict categories. If something sparks your interest, take it as a starting point and explore more:) Abalone: Shell-inspired pattern with layered iridescent curves. Adire: West African indigo resist-dyed textile with hand-crafted motifs. Ajrakh: Symmetrical Indian block print using natural dyes and geometric forms. Ankara: Bright African wax print with bold high-contrast designs. Batik: Wax-resist dyed textile built through layered dyeing processes. Chita de Alcobaça: Portuguese floral cotton print with small repeating motifs. Dashiki: Bold symmetrical print traditionally seen in West African garments. Fleur de Lis: Stylized lily motif rooted in European ornamental design. Kanga: East African printed cotton with bordered layouts and Swahili text. Kente: Woven West African textile with symbolic geometric patterning. Ketenge: East African printed cotton similar to kanga but without text panels. Kikoi: Striped woven East African fabric often finished with fringed edges. Madras: Lightweight cotton textile featuring colorful plaid patterns. Mother of Pearl: Iridescent surface effect inspired by mollusk shells. Mudcloth (Bogolanfini): Malian hand-painted cotton using fermented mud pigments. Samakaka: Angolan geometric print known for bold rhythmic line work. Seersucker: Cotton fabric with a puckered structure creating airy stripes. Shweshwe: South African cotton print with small repetitive geometric motifs. Tattersall: Checked pattern formed by evenly spaced fine lines. Tortoiseshell: Mottled brown and amber pattern inspired by turtle shell. Twill: Weave structure identified by its diagonal rib pattern. Ukara: Nigerian indigo-dyed cloth with stitched resist symbolic motifs. Vichy: Small evenly balanced check pattern commonly associated with gingham. Wide-wale Corduroy: Ribbed cotton fabric with thick raised vertical cords.

Fabric patterns are everywhere in interiors — stripes, florals, ikat, toile — but most people use them purely on instinct: I like it / I don’t like it. Knowing the name and the logic behind a pattern changes how you use it. You might think you “don’t like” ikat — but maybe you just don’t like a very traditional version of it. Once you understand the structure of a pattern, you can find interpretations that feel softer, bolder, more graphic, more minimal or more contemporary — and much closer to your own style. This isn’t about rules for decorating. It’s about understanding the language of patterns so you can choose — or break — them with intention. Save for future reference. #interiordesign #designtips #decor #homedecor #fabricpattern

Soft edges. Blurred lines. This pattern takes inspiration from ikat, where colour diffuses and shapes feel almost dreamlike. Nothing sharp, nothing fixed. There’s movement in every stitch… a gentle, flowing rhythm. Designed to feel organic, not defined. So what do you actually do with this pattern after? Start by scanning your artwork and cleaning up the seams between the squares so it becomes one continuous image. Or you can create everything digitally from the beginning if you prefer. From there, this pattern can become literally anything: a print for clothing, wrapping paper, accessories, bedding, coffee cups — the possibilities are endless. Of course, working digitally is faster and more efficient. But doing it on paper is more fun and often more interesting, because you get to keep the natural texture of the materials and that adds character you can’t fully replicate digitally. #pattern #diy #arttutorial #artistsoninstagram #design

🎨Come creare un pattern a mano in 4 semplici passaggi! ✂️ 1. #camiciecoraggiose #pattern #disegnopatternabile #patternabledesign #textiles #textilepattern #drawingpattern #art

Look. I LOVE designing repeat patterns as much as the next surface pattern designer. I’ve released 20 fabric collections with @modafabrics over the last 8 years. However, when I think about myself, my identity is NOT only “fabric designer” or “surface pattern designer”. I’m an artist and profitable business owner who knows how to make marketable, sellable art, and create art in different formats using different programs so that I can leverage my art across multiple industries and revenue streams. Only creating repeat patterns would have limited me too much. Here’s why I think you should branch out and design more than seamless repeat patterns. 1. Stand Out in the Market: Unique designs beyond repeat patterns help you create a distinct brand identity. 2. Increase Versatility: Diversifying your design skills makes you adaptable and opens up a wider range of project opportunities. 3. Personal Growth: Exploring different design styles pushes you out of your comfort zone, fostering both personal and professional growth. Have you ever felt boxed in by a label? What other creative roles do you see yourself stepping into? Share where you’re at and where you'd want to be—I’d love to know. 💛
