Eardrum ruptures are very painful! So, I’m sharing our story today to not only educate other parents but to also hopefully prevent other kids from having to experience it.💙👇🏻 Ames came home from flag football practice on Sunday afternoon saying his right ear hurt. Knowing we had flown last week for spring break and he had some nasal congestion, I figured it was probably related and he likely had some built up ear pressure. I gave him some Motrin once we got home (which temporarily helped). He and his twin sister started rough housing, which resulted in an accidental slap across his affected ear. It was all downhill from there. He screamed immediately with acute, sharp pain. We put ice on his ear, gave him Tylenol, and consoled him (sister apologized). He finally went to bed. About an hour after falling asleep, he woke up crying with what seemed like the world’s worst ear pain. He was crying hysterically and uncontrollably, saying his right ear hurt and he didn’t know what to do. He was very panicked! This all made my mom heart hurt for him! At this point, I was concerned he had a developing ear infection, but it was too soon to give him more medicine for pain. All of a sudden, he screamed saying, “Mommy, my ear is wet!” and he had sudden relief. All the pain was gone. Being a pediatric nurse practitioner myself, I knew he had perforated his tympanic membrane (eardrum). As soon as his pediatrician’s office opened the next morning (Monday), I got him an appointment. The diagnosis was confirmed and we think it was all due to a developing ear infection combined with the ear slap and recent plane flight. He’s now feeling much better. He has some ear drainage still, his hearing is a little diminished temporarily, and he’s on both an oral antibiotic and antibiotic ear drops to treat the infection. I’m so glad we figured this one out quickly! Now we just wait for the eardrum to heal itself over the next few weeks. And if it doesn’t heal, then we go see an ENT for possible patching. Hoping for the best!💙 Has anyone else’s kid had a ruptured eardrum? Did it heal well on its own? #perforatedeardrum P.S. I’m sharing prevention tips & my references in comments.👇🏻

A perforated eardrum means there’s a hole or tear in the thin membrane that separates the outer ear from the middle ear (the tympanic membrane). If they’re large, they often are easy to see…but if they’re small, it can be tricky! 👂 🔬 🔍 How do perforations happen in the first place? ✈️ Sudden pressure changes (barotrauma) 🔊 Loud sounds (acoustic trauma) 🦠 Infections (especially repeated or severe middle ear infections) ❌ Injury (like cotton swab use or trauma) 🧼 Foreign objects or even a slap to the ear 🩺 How is it treated? Most small perforations heal on their own with time. If they’re large do jot heal; however, a few strategies can be employed! 🏆 If you or your family physician is not sure if there is a perforation, a hearing test is a good place to start! 🩹 Paper patching: In-clinic procedure to help close small holes 🛠️ Surgery (tympanoplasty): For larger or persistent perforations ➡️ During healing: Keep the ear dry and avoid inserting anything into the canal!! 📣 Bottom line: Don’t ignore changes in hearing or drainage from your ear. A simple exam can help determine if you have a perforation — and most are very treatable! . . . . . #earnosethroat #ent #otology #hearing #eardrumhole #perforation #womeninmedicine #womeninsurgery #womeninotolaryngology #earnosethroatspecialist #womeninoto #otolaryngology #femalesurgeon #earnoseandthroat #surgeon #hearinghealth

A ruptured eardrum (tympanic membrane perforation) is a tear or hole in the thin tissue separating your outer and middle ear, often caused by infections, loud noises, or injury, leading to pain, drainage, and temporary hearing loss, but usually heals within weeks, though some require patches or surgery.   Symptoms Sudden, sharp ear pain, or sudden relief if pain was from an infection Fluid draining from the ear (clear, pus, or bloody) Tinnitus (ear ringing or buzzing) Partial or complete hearing loss in the affected ear Dizziness or vertigo Facial weakness (in severe cases)  Causes Infections: Middle ear infections causing fluid buildup. Trauma: A slap to the ear, inserting objects (like cotton swabs) too deep, or head injury. Pressure Changes (Barotrauma): Flying, scuba diving, or mountain driving. Loud Noises: Explosions or gunshots.  Treatment & Healing Most heal on their own: Often within weeks, with simple care. Keep it Dry: Avoid water in the ear to prevent infection. Antibiotics: Ear drops for infection. Eardrum Patch: A paper patch to help it close. Surgery (Tympanoplasty): For larger tears, using your own tissue to patch it.  When to See a Doctor Seek immediate medical attention for severe pain, significant hearing loss, fever, or bloody drainage.  LIKE SHARE AND FOLLOW TO SUPPORT #ear #drum #rupture #membrane #surgery

Chronic ear infections aren’t always just about the ear. This young boy’s ear had been draining pus for months, and nothing seemed to work. What many parents don’t realize is that recurrent ear infections can be linked to the shape of the jaws and palate. A narrow upper jaw creates a high, steep palate, which can affect the position and function of the Eustachian tube—the small canal responsible for draining the middle ear. When the jaw and palate are underdeveloped, fluid doesn’t drain properly, leading to repeated infections, discomfort, and even hearing loss. The science is clear: studies show a direct connection between otitis media (ear infections) and the anatomical form of the hard palate. That’s why looking at airway health, jaw development, and dental growth in children is so important—not just for their smiles, but for their overall health. At Canyon Lake Dental, we don’t just fix teeth—we help kids breathe, grow, and thrive. —Dr. Delia Tuttle, DDS Airway Dentist | Canyon Lake Dental #CanyonLakeDental #DrDeliaTuttle #AirwayDentistry #EarInfections #PediatricAirway #HealthyAirwayHealthyChild #BetterBreathingBetterLife #MouthBreathing #JawDevelopment #SleepApneaKids #EarlyOrthodontics #AirwayHealthForKids #CanyonLakeCA #CanyonLakeMoms #LakeElsinoreMoms #TemeculaMoms #MurrietaMoms #CoronaMoms #RiversideMoms #SoCalMoms #SouthernCaliforniaLife #92532 #InlandEmpireMoms #InlandEmpireLife

👂Blocked Ears? Discover the Bubbling Magic of Hydrogen Peroxide!👂 🤔 Ever feel like you’re underwater because of clogged ears? It’s like your own personal soundproof bubble - not fun, right? 💦A Splash from the Past: Picture this - for centuries, people have been using simple household items for health remedies. Hydrogen peroxide, a common household item, has been a go-to solution for ear blockages since the 1920s! ‼️The Trouble with Clogged Ears: Blocked ears can feel like you’re hearing the world through thick blankets. They can lead to discomfort, reduced hearing, and sometimes, pain. 📝Ingredients for Clear Ears: Hydrogen Peroxide (3% solution): The hero of our story. A dropper: Your tool for precision. 🌟Benefits - Hear the World More Clearly: Clears blockages, like a gentle tide washing away sandcastles. Reduces discomfort, like a soft pillow after a long day. Prevents buildup, keeping future ear issues at bay. 👂Recipe for Relief: Tilt your head, like leaning to hear a secret. Apply a few drops, like watering a delicate flower. Wait for the fizzing symphony, signaling the magic at work. 📑Step-by-Step to Ear Clarity: Prepare your tools. Administer the drops with care. Experience the fizzing action. Rinse and embrace the clarity. ♻️Nature’s Alternatives: Warm Olive Oil: For a soothing touch. Saline Solution: For gentle cleansing. Garlic Oil: For its natural antimicrobial properties. ⚠️Safety & Precautions: Always test for sensitivity, like a cautious chef sampling a new dish. Avoid if you have ear tubes or a perforated eardrum, like avoiding water in a leaky boat. ❓FAQs at Your Fingertips: How often? Only as needed. Any age restrictions? Best for adults and older children. Can it be used for infections? No, it’s for cleaning, not treating infections. How long does the fizzing last? Just a few minutes - like a short, effervescent concert! Can I use it with hearing aids? Remove aids first, like taking off shoes before entering a house. Follow for more natural, easy-to-follow health hacks. Together, let’s make health simple and effective! #EarHealth #HydrogenPeroxide #NaturalRemedies #HearingClear

If your ears constantly feel full, muffled, or like they need to pop, stop holding your nose and blowing—you're likely just creating more irritation. In the video, I’m showing the High-Grab Pop: By grabbing high on the ear and giving a quick, gentle downward pull, you create a rapid pressure change that provides instant relief. But if you have stubborn fluid trapped behind the eardrum (Eustachian tube dysfunction), you need the Low-Grab Stretch: 1️⃣ Grab low on the earlobe. 2️⃣ Pull down and hold a sustained stretch. Why does this work? The sustained stretch releases the surrounding fascia and soft tissue, physically opening up the Eustachian tube so that trapped fluid can finally drain out through your lymphatic system. Save this for allergy season 🤧 or your next flight ✈️, and let me know in the comments if you get the pop or the drain! 👇 #EustachianTubeDysfunction #CloggedEars #EarPressureRelief #LymphaticDrainage #FasciaRelease

1. Ear fullness is a symptom, not a diagnosis, so it’s important to find the underlying cause. 2. The most common cause is Eustachian tube dysfunction, where pressure isn’t equalized properly between the ear and the outside environment. 3. Allergies and sinus inflammation causing congestion can block your Eustachian tube and create that “plugged” sensation. 4. Earwax buildup can physically block your ear canal and mimic pressure or fullness. 5. Fluid behind your eardrum (middle ear effusion) can occur even without infection and cause fullness and muffled hearing. 6. Sudden ear fullness with hearing loss could be sudden sensorineural hearing loss and that is a medical emergency that needs urgent treatment. 7. Changes in altitude (flying, driving in mountains) can trigger ear fullness due to rapid pressure shifts. 8. TMJ (temporomandibular joint disorders) can refer pressure or fullness to the ear, even when the ear itself is normal. 9. Inner ear conditions like Ménière’s disease can cause fullness along with vertigo, tinnitus, and fluctuating hearing loss. 10. If ear fullness persists, worsens, or is one-sided, it should be evaluated to rule out more serious causes such as including masses or nerve-related conditions. #drnosebest #earnosethroat #healthandwellness

Your ears aren’t just for hearing they’re key to your balance, coordination, and brain health. Ignoring small ear symptoms can sometimes point to bigger health issues. If you notice ringing or buzzing (tinnitus), it may signal nerve irritation or high blood pressure. Fluid or pus discharge (otorrhea) could mean an infection or eardrum rupture. A persistent feeling of fullness or pressure might be linked to sinus issues or fluid buildup in the middle ear. Hearing loss, whether partial or sudden, should always be checked sometimes it’s due to wax, but it could also be nerve-related. If you experience dizziness or vertigo, your inner ear might be struggling to maintain balance. And any visible swelling, redness, or lumps around the ear could indicate infection, cysts, or inflammation that shouldn’t be ignored. Your ears often reveal what’s going on inside your body so don’t dismiss the signs. Early attention means easier treatment and better hearing health.
