Comment ME below and I’ll send you a full video on exactly how to correct this. Why does coning happen? Coning = pressure pushing forward through the linea alba (midline of your abs). It usually happens when: • You hold your breath • You bear down • You brace hard without engaging deep core properly • The movement is too advanced for your current core strength The fix is mostly about breath + deep core coordination, not just “tightening your abs harder.” If you want to fix it you want to learn 360° breathing with controlled exhale + deep core engagement. This is extremely beneficial whether you’re pregnant, postpartum or neither. 360 breathing is the BASIS of deep core work and engagement and if you don’t know how to do this it will be hard to rehab your core postpartum. If you struggle to stay consistent with exercise, this is for you. This is called habit stacking. A concept popularized by James Clear in Atomic Habits. The formula is simple: After or before [current habit], I will [new habit]. It’s not about doing more. It’s not about earning your coffee. It’s not about exercising all day. It’s about anchoring small amounts of movement to something you already do. Is habit stacking right for everyone? Nope. But as a physical therapist working with older adults, I’ve found it can be incredibly effective, even if it’s just a way to get started or to stay consistent during busy seasons of life. This video focuses on simple impact options for bone health. If bone density is on your mind, talk with your physician about a bone scan so you know your baseline before adding impact work. Then build gradually from there. My goal is always to make movement feel approachable. Not extreme. Not all or nothing. Not something you have to “deserve.” Just consistent. But when: ❌ IT Band is TIGHT → Pulls kneecap OUTWARD ❌ VMO muscle is WEAK → Can't pull kneecap INWARD = Patella tracks laterally = Grinds on outer femur = PAIN! --- 📍 PHASE 1: IT BAND RELEASE (Week 1-2) 🎯 IMMEDIATE RELIEF: 1️⃣ FOAM ROLLING (DAILY): ⭐ MOST IMPORTANT! • Lie on side, foam roller under outer thigh • Roll from hip to just above knee • SLOW passes: 60 seconds each leg • Pause on tender spots: 20-30 seconds • Do 2-3x daily • Pain level: 6-7/10 (uncomfortable but tolerable) . . As a physical therapist, I think one of the HARDEST things for me to get comfortable with was the flow of the initial evaluation. As a student, it’s daunting. And as a new grad - still scary!!! I remember the first initial eval on the schedule once I was working full time… I PRAYED he wouldn’t show up. I was so nervous. (He did show up and he did get better). It’s helpful to remind yourself that you can help the patient in front of you no matter what. The first visit doesn’t have to be perfect, it just has to be effective. Practice is everything. The reps really do matter. And it’s fun to role play and figure things out together! Great job @madalynmills_spt
