I’ve been doing this for a while, and as a trained teacher (yep! Elementary education), AND multi-industry project manager who’s worked 1-1 with PMP candidates.. I see the patterns very clearly. 🙅🏽‍♀️They argue with the questions. Instead of asking why the answer is correct, they insist PMI is wrong. 🙅🏽‍♀️They try to memorize everything and forget they are being tested on decision making. The PMP isn’t a memorization exam. It’s a decision-making exam. 🙅🏽‍♀️They resist the PMI framework. The concepts are apart of a larger whole! Think of it as the project ecosystem. 🙅🏽‍♀️ They study without the mental space to think clearly Burnout, stress, imposter syndrome, lack of sleep, whatever it is, if your brain is overloaded, the questions won’t click. And the PMP exam requires clear thinking. Phase 1: Pre-PIP (Silent Signal Phase) This is the most ignored phase. You may notice: • feedback turning vague • increased scrutiny on small mistakes • sudden “alignment” conversations • reduced support or clarity • work getting double-checked Nothing is documented yet but the narrative is forming. 👉 This is the best time to act. Phase 2: Soft PIP / Informal Monitoring Still not officially called a PIP. What happens: • frequent check-ins • “Let’s track performance closely” • written follow-ups after conversations • comparison with peers • emphasis on timelines & behaviour Documentation begins quietly. Phase 3: Formal PIP (Official Phase) This is when HR is involved. You’ll see: • written goals & metrics • 30 / 60 / 90-day timelines • weekly or bi-weekly reviews • clear consequences if goals aren’t met At this stage, pressure is high and outcomes are uncertain. Phase 4: Outcome Phase One of three things happens: • Exit – asked to resign or terminated • Extension – PIP continues with stricter scrutiny • Recovery – performance improves and you exit PIP Reality check: Many companies already expect an exit by this phase. Phase 5: Post-PIP (Often Overlooked) Even if you “clear” the PIP: • trust may be reduced • growth slows • visibility is limited • job security remains fragile That’s why many professionals choose to exit on their own terms later. The most important truth PIP is rarely about just performance. It’s about risk, perception, and positioning. The earlier you recognise the phase, the more control you have.
