Stop stretching your piriformis 👇 And here’s the part no one explains. If stretching your piriformis actually worked, your sciatica would be gone by now. The reason it keeps coming back is because the piriformis is rarely the cause. It’s usually the reaction. When your hips and pelvis don’t move well together, your nervous system steps in and tightens muscles to protect you. The piriformis is one of the first to do that. So when you stretch it, you feel relief. But nothing changed in how your body is moving or loading that area. That’s why the pain returns. Sciatica sticks around when the system is the problem: • Poor hip control • Pelvis not sharing load • Spine doing work it shouldn’t be doing Until those pieces change, your body keeps using tension as protection. That’s why we start by teaching the hips and pelvis how to move independently and confidently again. Once the brain trusts the movement, the guarding shuts off. Less tension. Less nerve irritation. If your sciatica keeps coming back, something is still restricting the nerve. Burning. Pulling. Deep hip pain that shoots down the leg. That’s how most people describe sciatica - and for many, it has nothing to do with a disc. In this video, I show how the sciatic nerve becomes adhered to the piriformis, limiting its ability to glide and triggering a constant protective response. Why adhesions form Adhesions develop after: • Injury or surgery • Repetitive loading • Prolonged guarding • Inflammation or immobility When tissues lose their ability to slide independently, the nervous system perceives threat. Why pressure matters Releasing a nerve adhesion is not about “digging harder.” Research and clinical models show that approximately 6.2 lbs of force is required to restore glide - but only when applied with precise contact and direction. Too little = no change Too much = guarding increases What happens when the nerve can’t move • The hip increases protective guarding • Muscles stay hypertonic • Load shifts abnormally • Pain persists - even at rest or with stretching That’s why stretching alone often makes sciatica worse. The missing piece Releasing the sciatic nerve is one step. If you don’t also: ✔️ Identify all remaining restrictions ✔️ Restore normal movement ✔️ Rebuild tolerance to load …the nervous system will protect again - and the pain comes back. So the biggest mistake you can make is continually stretching the leg, hoping it gets better Because a sensitive nerve does not want to be stretched, and this can prevent you from healing! So how do you fix this without stretching with the pain is? 🔑 The key here is to address sciatica at the root, which is in the low back! (Bending, arching, side bending?) If yes, some of these might help temporarily, but you’ll want to dig deeper into the low back. If no, keep reading. . Folks generally report: 🔻 Numbness or tingling down the leg 🔻 Worse with sitting 🔻 Discomfort in the glute 🔻 Limited hip IR (in a shortened state) . ❗️BUT—if you’ve tried all the classic stretches and they make things worse or do nothing AND you know it’s not a low back issue—you might actually have a 👉🏻lengthened piriformis. . 📚 Newer research shows that an excessively LENGTHENED piriformis can be just as problematic. . 👩🏻‍⚕️ An evaluation is always best, but here are a few ideas to try: 1️⃣ Supine pigeon rocks 2️⃣ Lateral tap downs – don’t let the knee cave or hip pop outward 3️⃣ Glute kick backs – avoid arching the low back .
