The Proprioception Finger Test Most people think coordination is just strength, but a huge part of movement quality is proprioception. Proprioception is your brain’s ability to know where your body is in space without looking. This finger to finger drill (eyes closed) is a simple way to test how accurate your internal “body map” is. Why it matters: When proprioception is strong, you move smoother, react faster, and stay more stable under load. When it’s weak, your brain becomes less confident, your body stiffens up, and compensation patterns show up. This is a big reason athletes get injured and why people feel “tight” even when they stretch a lot. What’s normal: It’s normal to be slightly off with your eyes closed. Research shows average error without vision is often around 1.5 to 2 cm (vision tightens closer to about 1.2 to 1.3 cm). If you’re consistently missing by a lot, shaky, or uneven side to side, your nervous system likely needs work. Try it 30 to 60 seconds daily, slow and controlled. #proprioception #neuroscience #nervoussystem #motorcontrol #nervoussystemhealing

Proprioception is our body’s hidden sense — the ability to feel where our body parts are and how they move. It helps us balance, coordinate, and move smoothly. Deep pressure, pushing, pulling, jumping, and hugging all stimulate proprioception. That’s why “pressure” is proprioceptive input! Deep pressure — also called “heavy work” — is one of the best ways to stimulate proprioception. When we press, push, pull, or squeeze, we give the body proprioceptive input that calms and organizes the nervous system. pressure IS proprioception! 👉 Want more proven tips, sensory play ideas, and effective physio exercises? Got a Clumsy Kid? Let’s Strengthen Their Coordination! 🧠🚸 If your child struggles with smooth movements, running, or has a degree of dyspraxia, it’s time to check how well their cerebellum is doing its job! The cerebellum plays a key role in balance and coordination. Quick Test for the Cerebellum 🔍 Arm Twist Test: Have your child extend their arms straight and twist from side to side. Watch For: If one arm is more rigid or less smooth, that’s a sign the cerebellum might need a little help! Speed Test: Get them to twist side to side quickly. If one side feels clumsier, we know which side of the cerebellum needs work. Fun Exercise to Strengthen Coordination🤸 Laser Figure Eights: For bigger movements, have them extend their arm and make large figure eights with a laser pointer. For smaller movements, keep the elbow by their side and make smaller figure eights. Regular practice will help smooth out their movements and boost coordination! 🩺Need more tips? Most parents have no idea these hidden reflexes can affect focus, behavior, balance, learning, and emotional regulation. Here are 5 simple tests you can try in under 2 minutes: 1️⃣ Balance Test (TLR Reflex) Have your child stand with feet together, eyes closed, head down. If they sway or fall → their vestibular system may still be immature. 2️⃣ Head Turning Test (ATNR Reflex) Put them on hands and knees and gently turn their head side to side. Watch the arms. If one bends or collapses → ATNR may still be active. 3️⃣ Cheek Stroke (Rooting Reflex) Gently stroke from ear to mouth with a pen. If their head moves toward the stimulus → this reflex isn’t integrated. 4️⃣ Palm Stroke (Palmar Reflex) Lightly stroke the palm with a pen. If the fingers twitch or want to grasp → the palmar reflex may still be present. 5️⃣ Spinal Stroke (Spinal Galant Reflex) Stroke down one side of the lower back. If their hips wiggle or they pull away → this reflex is likely retained. These reflexes can impact: ❌ ADHD-like behaviors ❌ Sensory overload ❌ Emotional outbursts ❌ Poor handwriting & motor skills ❌ Bedwetting ❌ Clumsiness & balance issues ❌ Reading & learning struggles The good news? Primitive reflexes CAN be integrated with simple exercises — and kids can improve fast once the brain gets the right input. ⭐ If this helped, SAVE this reel and comment “Thanks!” so we know to make more valuable videos like this! 🤸 Romberg’s Test: Checking Balance and Neurological Health 🔬 The Essence of the Method Romberg’s Test is a simple yet informative check of balance and cerebellar function (the part of the brain responsible for coordination). This test is often used in neurology for a quick assessment of proprioception (the sense of the body’s position in space). 📝 How to Perform Romberg’s Test on a Child 1. Position: The child stands straight, feet together (soles pressed against each other). 🧍 2. Arms: Arms are stretched straight forward or held out to the sides. 👐 3. Eyes: The eyes are closed. 👀 4. Observation: Observe the child’s posture for 20-30 seconds. ⚠️ What the Results Mean - Norm: The child maintains a steady posture, with only slight physiological swaying. 👍 - Deviation: Swaying, pronounced trembling, or falling may indicate issues: - With coordination and balance (cerebellar disorders). - With proprioception (sensation). - With muscle strength or general fatigue. - With attention span or stress😥 Important: If the child only loses balance when their eyes are closed (a positive Romberg’s test), it indicates problems in the deep sensation system (proprioception). If swaying occurs even with eyes open, the problem is likely related to the cerebellum. ✨ Additional Observations - Tics: Involuntary twitching (tics) may also appear or worsen under conditions requiring the maintenance of a static posture and concentration. 👆 - Stress: Prolonged or severe swaying can be a sign of high levels of anxiety, as the test requires attention and muscle control, which are impaired by nervous tension. Write in the comments what your child’s Romberg’s test posture showed! 👇 . . . . . #RombergsTest #Neurology #Coordination #Balance #ChildHealth #BalanceCheck #MotorSkills #ADHD

This looks like a game. It’s actually a neurological test. 🧠 Neuropsychologists have used this exact hand sequence for decades to assess how well a child’s brain coordinates movement, sequences actions, and switches between tasks. When a child struggles with it: 😵 mixes up the order 😵 speeds up and loses control 😵 can’t keep both hands going at the same time …it’s a signal. Not that they’re not trying. But that the brain-body connection needs training. And here’s the part most parents don’t know 👇 That same connection controls posture. You know how your child starts a meal sitting upright… and 3 minutes later they’re basically lying on the table? 😅 That’s not laziness. That’s the nervous system losing the signal. The brain simply hasn’t learned to hold a motor pattern over time. Reminders don’t fix that. This does. ✅ Both hands, different rhythms, sustained attention. Just 10 minutes at the kitchen table — and you’re training the exact system that keeps your child’s back upright at school. 🏫 Try it with your child tonight and tell me — could they keep both hands going at the same time without mixing them up? 👇😄 💾 Save this — it’s worth coming back to.

Once I learned that Hakeem has issues with the proprioceptive sensory system, I started to add sensory activities that would satisfy that proprioceptive search. It’s on my mind at all times and when I see him doing certain things - I know his body is looking for it. If your child has it, you have to make sure to include proprioceptive activities at regular intervals throughout the day as much as you can. 🧠 It’s a daily protocol. I noticed that my son started bending back fingers until they cracked pretty often, and it was not like this before. This is the sign of proprioceptive imbalance. 💡There is one simple but powerful tool - a weighted medicine ball! I recently started using one with Hakeem, and I noticed that the habit of cracking his fingers back is fading. That’s because the ball is giving him the input his body was craving. Here are 4 easy exercises you can do at home: ◉ Weighted Ball Presses: Have your child squeeze the ball between both hands for 5-7 seconds to build hand strength and provide deep pressure. ◉ Medicine Ball Rolling: Roll the ball back and forth with them to improve coordination, stability, and sensory input. ◉ Overhead Pass & Catch: Lifting and catching the ball helps with grip strength, coordination, and proprioception (aka body awareness). ◉ Medicine Ball Dribble: Bouncing the ball gives hands and wrists that impact + resistance they need to build strength. ◉ You can also try doing the last exercise from the video. It works great for the core strength and combines rolling and coordination which is a great combo. There are so many varieties of what you can do with the weighted medicine ball, but try with a simple one. Here’s WHY this works 👇 When your child crashes, jumps, hangs or pushes — they’re not being naughty. Their body is craving heavy proprioceptive input 🧠 Proprioception is the sense that tells your body where it is in space. When this system is dysregulated — you see: ❌ Meltdowns ❌ Constant movement seeking ❌ Poor focus ❌ Emotional dysregulation A near-handstand gives the body exactly what it’s craving — deep joint compression that calms the nervous system from the inside out 🙌 How to start 👇 ▶️ Begin with just 5 seconds ▶️ Build to 10 seconds by week 2 ▶️ Aim for 15-20 seconds by week 3 ▶️ Always supported & safe ⚠️ Important reminder: This one activity alone isn’t enough. Heavy proprioceptive input works BEST as part of a complete sensory diet — a personalised daily plan of sensory activities designed specifically for your child’s nervous system. Save this and start with 5 seconds today 💛 (Focus activities at home ,improve focus without medication, reduce hitting in kids, kid sleep better at night, toddler tantrums, toddler meltdowns ,sensory dysregulation, proprioceptive activity, sensory integration,ADHD,autism, occupational therapy activities,ot at home, paediatric physiotherapy) #sensoryintegration #playbasedtherapy #hyperactivity #sensoryprocessingdisorder #sensorydiet

Balance Is a Sensory Skill, Not Just a Strength Skill 🧠⚖️ This test shows how the brain uses vision and proprioception to maintain balance. 🧪 What we tested: Balanced on a BOSU ball with eyes open and then closed. With eyes open, balance was stable. With eyes closed, sway increased — revealing reduced proprioceptive input from the feet and joints. 🧠 Why this happens: Proprioception tells the brain where the body is in space. When this system underperforms, the brain compensates by relying more on vision — which limits balance when visual input is removed. ⚡ The intervention: We increased proprioceptive input using a vibration plate, flooding the nervous system with sensory information through the feet while eliminating visual compensation. 📈 The outcome: After only two minutes, balance improved — demonstrating how quickly the nervous system can respond to targeted sensory input. 💡 Key takeaway: Effective balance training must address the brain and sensory systems, not just muscles. *This content is for educational purposes only and is not medical advice. 📍Neurologic Wellness Institute Boca Raton, FL | Chicago, IL | Waukesha, WI | Wood Dale, IL #Proprioception #Balance #NervousSystemHealth #VestibularRehab #Neuroplasticity

🧠 Do you actually know where your body is in space? That is proprioception. ⚡ Proprioception is your brain’s internal map of your body, built from input coming from your skin, muscles, and joints. 👀 A simple test is to close your eyes and try to touch your nose accurately. Sounds easy… until it’s not. 📉 If you miss, shake, or lose precision, it may mean your proprioceptive system is not as sharp as it could be. 💡 The cerebellum plays a big role here, helping coordinate accuracy, timing, and smooth movement. 🔗 Better proprioception means the brain feels safer, which allows more efficient and confident movement. 🔥 Poor proprioception can increase threat, leading to stiffness, hesitation, or less control. 🔁 You can train it with slow, controlled joint movements, circles, and position specific isometrics. 🖐️ Adding skin stimulation and occasionally working with eyes closed can further improve the system. 📈 The more precise your internal map, the better you move, perform, and reduce unnecessary tension. 🎯 Train your awareness, not just your strength. #zhealth #zhealthperformance #appliedneuroscience #brainbasedtraining #movementcoach

Comment CRAVE to get our free sensory activities list, it’s filled with proprioceptive ideas to help your kid regulate! You know that rough and tumble kid who can’t get enough crashing, squeezing, biting, falling? They might be seeking out proprioceptive input to regulate their sensory system! Our kids show us what their sensory systems need through the way they act, behave, and respond to the world around them- It’s all communication! Our body is covered in proprioceptive receptors, and when we jump, run, or get squeezed they get activated. Some kids SEEK OUT this type of input because it regulates their system and some kids need it because all those proprioceptive receptors give us our sense of body awareness. Body awareness is what helps us not bump into or drop things all the time. So the three activities above can help meet our kids needs and increase their body awareness, but there’s a lot more ideas in my FREE sensory activity pac. Get it today when you comment CRAVE!
