SPProtaper gold VS Protaper ultimate
These are the two most popular rotary systems around
What are the differences
1. Protaper gold has no rotary glide path file - then 2 shapers and 3 finishing files to reach F3 (30 09) im not going to mention F4 and F5 because I’ve never used these - to reach F3 requires at least 5 files if not a glide path file also
2. Protaper ultimate has 1 Shaper and 3 finishers to reach F3 - so one less file - there is also the Slider M wire glide path file which I love - because the semi active tip often means no hand files are required to make the glide path
3. Now for the real difference !! The shaper and finishers up to F3 are all 1mm max file diameter which means if the canal is approximately 22mm or more the. The D15 or D16 won’t lock coronally preventing advancement of the file - therefore prep is quicker using Protaper ultimate - AND the jumps between the files feel small BECAUSE reduction of the file diameter improves flexibility and cornering (Trunatomy is the fastest at cornering with 0.8mm max file diameter)
The Protaper gold files are all 1.2mm max diameter and in long curved canals bind coronally and are more difficult to advance apically
4. Protaper ultimate has a blue wire set of files useful for anterior teeth I especially love the FX tip size 35 12% taper for big apical shapes in upper anterior teeth ! It’s my go to . The debasement with the 12% meaning the file has a tip size of 35 then jumps to 47,59,71 means good apical debridement over the Protaper gold large file sizes which lack that greater taper and as a result just don’t debrief those upper anterior teeth
So my thoughts on these systems are
- Protaper ultimate offers faster preparation , use in more diverse anatomy and in less files per case than Protaper gold - so in my practice Protaper Ultimate is a system I use often
