Protein comes from the Greek word protos, meaning first or primary. That already tells you a lot. It is arguably the most important of the macronutrients. To keep things simple, my recommendation is around 2 grams of protein per kilogram of bodyweight if you are training for performance or strength. When the goal is fat loss, this number should increase, because it’s easy to lose muscle when you’re in a calorie deficit, and protein is muscle sparing so it’s a better strategy to achieve your deficit through reduction in fat and carbs but keep the protein high at around 2.5 grams per kg of bodyweight. My top three protein sources are: • Lean beef (preferably eye fillet, as it is the leanest) • Whole eggs (free-range and organic where possible) • Whey protein isolate ( @transparentlabs is what I use, I eat it with oatmeal every morning for breakfast, and again after my training sessions) There are obviously many other good protein sources, and If you are vegetarian or vegan, things change slightly and food selection becomes more important, but the principle stays the same. In this video, I answer some of the most common frequently asked questions about protein and why it deserves the attention it gets.
