Try these!👇 As always, there are many things that can contribute, but here are a few things that may help!😉 Check your back motion & hip motion first to see if that is playing a role! If the back is stiff/tight, try open books to help loosen up the back. If the hips are stiff/tight, try the IR/ER rockers to help loosen up the hips. You can start using your hands then progress to not using your hands. Then build strength in the hips! You can start with a standard bridge, then progress to the march to progress hip strength/stability and core stability, then progress to a single leg bridge. Don’t forget about the side of the hips too with the clam circles! Shoulder discomfort with reverse flys? Try these!👇 As always, there are many things that can contribute, but here are a few things that may help!😉 First, check your form! Make sure you’re pinching the shoulder blades back (not up toward your ear) to engage the muscles that stabilize the scapula/shoulder blade! 1. Scapular retractions - this helps isolate the shoulder blade movement to get the patterning down 2. Bent over row - this progresses the scapular retractions by adding the shoulder blade movement. Make sure to keep the shoulder blade movement the same as the scapular retractions! 3. Prone scorpions - this helps loosen up the front of the shoulder as your pec may restrict the ability for the shoulder blade to come back! *Keep in mind, if you want to isolate the rear delt the form is different! STRUGGLING WITH YOUR PUPPY PRESS? Not only do you have to have proper body awareness, balance, upper body strength, and core strength, you need a fair amount of hip mobility and strength for your puppy press! First, check your straddle - if you’re not able to get down without rounding the back significantly, your hip mobility may be to blame. 1. Straddle heel slides - this works compression (end range strength) of the hip so you can get your knee closer to your shoulder to get more weight over your hands before having to lift the other foot up off the ground. 2. Modified kneeling leg lifts - this works end range hip strength to feel more comfortable at end range and improve the hip active motion. Use a block to help cue the hips to stay even. 3. Puppy press knee extensions - these work hamstring flexibility of the leg on the ground and also hip mobility on the other side. Work getting your knee out to the side and over top of the shoulder and straighten your leg. You can progress this more by pushing through the shoulders and going onto the toe of the stance leg. Don’t forget, for a puppy press, you need a solid free standing handstand! Upper back mobility can impact so many things, so working on it is super important! The mid back can impact your neck, shoulders, and lower back and it can be impacted by your workouts, daily activites, etc. People all harp on posture, but really the only “bad” posture is one you can’t get out of! The goal is to be able to move into and out of different positions, so movement throughout the day is important!
