PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) is one of the most powerful techniques in electronics. Instead of reducing voltage like a variable resistor (which wastes power as heat), PWM switches the supply ON and OFF at very high speed. The secret lies in the duty cycle — the ratio of ON time to total time of one cycle. At 50% duty cycle: The signal is 5V for half the time And 0V for the other half So the average voltage becomes: (5 × 0.5) + (0 × 0.5) = 2.5V Important: The voltage is NOT actually reduced to 2.5V. It is still switching between 0V and 5V. But loads like LEDs, DC motors, and filters respond to the average value — which makes PWM extremely efficient. That’s why PWM is used in: • Motor speed control • LED dimming • SMPS • Inverters • Solar charge controllers • Microcontrollers (Arduino, ESP32, etc.) High efficiency. Low heat loss. 📌PULSE AMPLITUDE MODULATION Pulse amplitude modulation is the simplest form of modulation. It is an Analog to digital conversion method where the message information is encoded in the amplitude of the series of signal pulses. Pulse amplitude modulation is a technique in which the amplitude of each pulse is controlled by the instantaneous amplitude of the modulation signal. It is a modulation system in which the signal is sampled at regular intervals and each sample is made proportional to the amplitude of the signal at the instant of sampling. This technique transmits the data by encoding in the amplitude of a series of signal pulses 🔶️The pulse amplitude modulation can be generated through 555IC by connecting one NPN transistor at the output. The connection of this IC can be done in the astable mode for producing a pulse train so that samples of the audio signal can be obtained.

A digital pin is either fully on or fully off. No middle ground. So how does your Arduino dim an LED or slow a motor? It switches the pin on and off so fast the output device averages it. That is PWM. Pulse Width Modulation. The pin switches on and off at a fixed frequency. The ratio of on-time to total cycle time is the duty cycle. 100% duty cycle: pin on the whole time. Full brightness. Full speed. 50% duty cycle: pin on half the time. Half brightness. Half speed roughly. 0% duty cycle: pin off the whole time. Off. analogWrite(pin, 128) sets 50% duty cycle. analogWrite(pin, 255) is 100%. analogWrite(pin, 0) is 0%. The device being controlled averages the switching. An LED responds slowly enough that 490Hz switching looks like a steady dimmer light. A motor’s inertia averages the pulses into a steady reduced speed. Where PWM shows up in real circuits: Motor speed control: vary duty cycle to vary average voltage and therefore speed. LED dimming: same principle. Perceived brightness changes with duty cycle. Servo motors: a specific PWM frequency and pulse width sets the angle. Audio: high frequency PWM through a low pass filter can generate analogue audio. Buck converters: a switching transistor at high frequency with varying duty cycle controls output voltage. It is everywhere because it is how digital systems control analogue quantities efficiently.
