It is one of the most counterintuitive aspects of quantum mechanics—so much so that Albert Einstein famously dismissed it as “spooky action at a distance.” How It Works In the quantum world, particles like electrons or photons don’t have definite characteristics until they are measured. Instead, they exist in a “superposition” of all possible states at once. When two particles become entangled: 1. Their individual identities effectively merge into a single shared state. 2. If you measure a property (like “spin”) of one particle, its state collapses from a superposition into a definite value. 3. Instantly, the second particle’s state also collapses to a corresponding value, no matter how many light-years away it is. The “Spin” Analogy Imagine you have two “magic” coins. Normally, if you flip two coins, the result of one has nothing to do with the other. However, if these coins are entangled: • While they are spinning on the table, they are neither heads nor tails (superposition). • The moment you stop one coin and see it is Heads, the other coin—even if it’s on the other side of the galaxy—will immediately stop spinning and show Tails. It is important to note that you cannot predict which coin will be heads; you only know that they will always be perfect opposites.
