A few months ago I created the cross-universe symbolic regression tournament (CUSRT). It’s an algorithm that can recover equations. The 20 page paper is on my website (link in bio). The main idea is that you overfit independent data realms (“universes”) deliberately, then have those candidate equations compete for survival based on global generalization and parsimony. I created it as part of my quant finance research and it’s been pretty fun to play around with. This demo used 420 universes, 96x96 grids with 294 trained (5,306,112 samples) and 126 tested (2,274,048 samples) (total 7,580,160 samples). The model selected on trained universes and validated on held out test universes. I’m really happy with how lightweight it is - im running everything on my personal iMac which struggles to boot up wizard101 at times so we’re not exactly dealing with state of the art tech lol.
