Do diet breaks help fat loss? Someone asked me how long you can be in a calorie deficit for and how often you should take a break. That’s not easy to answer. It probably depends on a whole shitload of factors like how fast someone is losing weight, what their body fat level is at, how they feel etc. For example, I can maintain lower levels of body fat pretty effortlessly whereas a lot of people would start feeling like dog shit if they tried dieting even close to where I am (individual biology). For some people, they might find diet breaks help with appetite regulation. For some people they might not notice this but find their performance in the gym improves. Either way, there isn’t a whole shitload of research to look at. So I thought a better way to answer this is to explain what a diet break is hoping to achieve so you can make the best decisions for yourself. Have you tried them? Do not confuse a #REFEED with a #CHEATDAY. In my experience, many clients are confused about the difference. A REFEED should only be scheduled due to physiological demand. A CHEAT DAY, on the other hand, is due to a psychological desire. Many people will call CHEAT DAYS…REFEEDS, as a means to wash away some form of perceived guilt. I do not believe in that. As long as you are honest with yourself and with your coach, you should be able to schedule both a re-feed and a cheat day, being fully accountable for the reasons behind the decision. Now, cheat days are most common with newer dieters, as they are still stuck in the gravitational pull of their old habits and lifestyle. After maybe 3 to 6 months of living a consistently healthy lifestyle, the desire for cheat meals, simply fades away. Conversely, more experienced fitness devotes will intuitively understand the physiological drive that precipitates the acknowledgment of a re-feed. Of course, this is a rather complex conversation that I’m trying to distill down into a quick little social media post. I Gained 10lbs in One Day… explained below 👇🏼 What is a Refeed Day? 🥞 A refeed day is a planned day of increased caloric / carb intake during a cutting diet, usually done towards the end when the trainee is fairly lean 🔪 This day involves consuming more calories than the usual daily caloric intake, particularly in the form of carbohydrates, while keeping protein and fat intake at similar levels or even dropping them to make room for more carbs 🥔 There’s a few reasons behind a refeed day such as completely replenishing glycogen stores, restoring lost performance in the gym, give the body a break from the deficit and improve overall energy, metabolism and mood 🙏🏼 A refeed day can also help reduce hunger levels, making it easier to stick to a long-term diet plan 🤝 It can also provide a mental break from the strict dietary regimen and serve as a reward for sticking to a healthy eating plan 💆‍♂️ Refeed days are typically scheduled once every other week, depending on a few various factors 🗓️ The calorie increase and macronutrient ratios are adjusted based on the individual’s needs and progress 📈 The difference in a refeed day vs a “cheat day” is your calories don’t go much over maintenance levels (hence no fat gain), they are planned and the increase comes mainly from carbohydrates 👊🏼 The 10lbs weight gain is mainly down to muscle glycogen, water, sodium and undigested food. Do calories matter more than macronutrients? We all know you can change your weight by eating more or less food (calories, specifically). Think of it like a simple seesaw, put more weight (food) on one side, the other end (body weight) goes up. Very simple analogy. But your body has different components that don't all increase or decrease at the same time. For example, you can decrease fat mass and increase muscle mass at the same time. If you consume exactly the same number of calories as your identical twin but you eat a high protein diet and they eat a low protein diet, you will likely build more muscle and lose more fat than they will. Even if your calorie intakes are the same. True story, many clients have come to me and said their old slimming clubs told them NOT to weight train because it would slow down weight loss. A few happy tears were shed. 🍔🍟🤤 When you have a goal to work towards, you have to let will power take over. For 4 months, I basically ate chicken, egg whites, oatmeal, turkey, fish, spinach, asparagus and broccoli. And for the last couple weeks, pretty much no carbs at all. 🥹 But I’ll tell you.
