Adding the citations into your thesis is a dreadful task, no matter how organized your reference manager is or how meticulous you are. It can be frustrating to interrupt your writing flow to embed your citations into your document or try to find the paper that said what you remember reading about 3 years prior, but trying to add in your citations at the end when you’ve written about 100 pages of new information is even worse.
Three Tips for Citing your Thesis as you go:
1. USE A REFERENCE MANAGER YOU LIKE! Try out the different reference managers and find one that works well with the software you are using for your thesis writing. I personally like Zotero because the import from Chrome and directly into Microsoft Word was so easy and user friendly. But plenty of academics love One Note or Mendeley.
2. COPY AND PASTE THE PMID OR AUTHOR NAME. If you don’t feel like embeding each citation as you go using your reference manager, at least put the author name or PMID in parentheses instead of (Reference?).
3. ADD IN NEW CITATIONS BY PARAGRAPH! If you feel like adding in citations via your reference manager interrupts your flow, do it by page or paragraph. That way the papers you are citing are still fresh in your mind, or the tab is still in your browser, but you are not so far removed that you can’t remember where you got the info. I found this technique worked best to balance both writing flow and organization of citations.

You should always reach out to your references before sharing them with a potential employer because 1) you want them to be prepared, and 2) you want to make sure that they have good things to say about you!
Here’s an email template you can use and adjust -
Hi, [insert reference name]! I hope that you’re doing well. I’m reaching out because I’ve been offered the role of [insert position title] at [insert company name], and I’ve been asked to provide references. I had a great experience working with you at [insert company name], and if you’re willing I’d love to include you as a reference, as I think you’d be able to accurately explain the work I did and the type of team member that I am. I’ll share both the job posting and my resume in advance for your review so you have a bit more context. Please let me know what you think. Thanks in advance, [insert your name].
