GRAmazing and poignant footage of Jean-Michel Basquiat as a child in Brooklyn that I’d never seen before. Just beautiful! Chapter 26 in my @thamesandhudson book looks more deeply at his childhood influences. He was born to a Haitian father and a Puerto Rican mother (briefly seen here) and had a deep intellectual curiosity as a child - and by the age of eleven he spoke English, Spanish and French fluently. His mother Matilde was interested in art and took him to all the museums, and by the age of six he was already creating complex drawings. At seven he was hit by a car and suffered a broken arm and internal injuries, and it was during his recovery his mother gave him a copy of “Gray’s anatomy”, the classic medical textbook which became a lifelong source of inspiration, including for the painting “Hollywood Africans” (1983), which I discuss in my book. @thamesandhudsonusa @basquiatofficial @basquiatkingpleasure @lisanebasquiat @basquiat_fans @basquiatforever @moca_london

And when you look at the face of the central figure, there is no question that Tony Shafrazi is right, this is Andy Warhol.”
