I have a love / hate relationship with Shot Put, albeit, I am starting to love it again... A good throw in competition and breakthroughs in training usually changes that. Here’s the fundamentals for the process 1. Technique - proper timing of foot, hip and upper body 2. Strength & Conditioning 3. Grunt, don’t be soft There are text books on technique, so I am not even going to try write about that all here. I always recommend get a good coach to guide you. But the basics of shot for me are timing of postiions. If you get this right, you don’t have to think about throwing hard. You build tension and the release is beautiful.

One of the most common errors in the shot put spin is “pulling out of the back,” where the athlete’s left shoulder and hip rotate too early and the body leans back. This causes over-rotation of the feet, loss of balance, and an open upper body at the finish, cutting the throw short. Why does this happen? Rushing the rotation before the body is ready disturbs flow and stability. Fixing it starts with slowing down the movement and focusing on control—especially around the left leg, which acts as the pivot point. Here’s how to fix it: • Start slow, feel the left side open just right without leaning back. • Keep your hips and shoulders aligned and controlled. • Practice drills that emphasize balance over speed. Remember, quality beats speed. Master control early, and your speed and distance will come naturally. Build your technique from the ground up and throw smarter, not just harder. #Throwify #ShotPutSpin #ThrowingTips #CoachMason #TrackAndField #FieldEvents #BalanceAndControl #ThrowersLife #YouthAthletes #TrainSmartThrowFar

How to Glide in the Shot Put 👇 Start in the back of the ring. Right hip underneath you. Left leg long and relaxed behind. Chest low. Almost parallel to the ground. Now sweep the left in so your knees come together. Do it over and over. Slow. Controlled. Rhythmic. This builds balance. Most throwers skip this part. That’s why they rush. Next rep — pull the left in and drive hard off your right heel. Stay low. Don’t pop up. Your left side stays long and close to the ground. Right foot lands on the ball of the foot in the middle. Left foot snaps down against the toe board. Right heel in line with left toe. That heel-toe alignment gives your hips room to fire. Keep your chest back through the middle. Eyes back. Right shoulder back. If you open early, you lose power. When the left hits the front — Rip the right hip through. Block hard with the left side. Finish over the toe board. Shot tight on the neck. Elbow up. Smooth glide. Violent finish. Balance first. Speed second. Follow for more throwing tips. #shotput #discus

The “Kneel and Throw” Drill. This is by far one of my favorite drills for developmental shot putters that struggle with understanding “how to properly release the shot put”. I learned this from one of my all time favorite mentors Bill Godina @discuscoach70 (legend John Godina’s Dad @johngodina ). I also use this same concept when working with Para/Adapted Seated Throwers. . . . So, what’s a “Kneel and Throw” Drill? When visualizing what a shot put release looks like, I want you to imagine your arms are the shape of a “T”. Your elbows are pointed out as you push the shot put off your neck while your thumb is pointing down. . . . Understanding that image, the athlete will kneel on their dominant knee (for right hand throwers the right knee will be on the ground for left-hand throwers the left knee will be on the). Keeping the hips forward, have the athlete release the shot put. When done correctly, the athletes elbows will remain pointed out while the thumb will be pointing down on their release hand. . . . Having the athlete in a kneeling position, will eliminate the athlete from shifting weight and forcing the athlete to engage their core while the sole focus is on their T finish with their thumb down. . . . With the shot put ring being smaller than a discus ring, you have to understand that shot put is a more compact event, which means less room for error. Something as simple as your release can add or subtract a meter from your throw. Because this movement is very simple, it is important to train it at a very complex level; meaning it is best to do this drill at the end of a throwing session when your athlete’s muscles are slightly fatigued, or having it be the only thing that you focus on in a throwing session. Why? Because this is a position that will either have to recalibrate muscle memory or if you’re lucky, create positive muscle memory! . . . LIKE - SHARE - COMMENT . . . DM me today!
