Glute-focused Bulgarian split squats on the smith machine ๐Ÿ‘ I personally love programming them on the smith because of the additional stability it provides, so I can go heavier and really keep form locked in while pushing closer to failure. Since the bar is on a fixed path, the machine provides the stability for me vs when I use a DB my body has to create the stability + still focus on targeting the glutes. Both are great options so pick the equipment that best fits your needs + goals. Why I currently prefer smith machine bulgarians over dumbbells๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿผ After injuring my knee last summer, split squats were a no go for a while๐Ÿ™ƒ When I started putting them back into my training I felt quite unstable on the weaker leg with dumbbells. ๐Ÿ“ฅ Drop these SMITH MACHINE BULGARIAN SPLIT SQUATS into your next lower body or glute day! ๐Ÿ”ฅ โ€ข ๐Ÿงจ Pro Tip - You can either do this exercise facing forward OR sideways on the smith machine. ๐Ÿ”ฅ โ€ข ๊ซ‚ย แดแ‚…แด Facing Forward - This might be the โ€œnormalโ€ way to do this exercise. The weight is distributed onto the whole body. ๐Ÿ’ฏ ๊ซ‚ย แดแ‚…แด Facing Sideways (this video) - This places the weight on only one side of the body. Itโ€™s the equivalent of holding one dumbbell out to your side. ๐Ÿ’ฏ ๊ซ‚ย แดแ‚…แด ALWAYS offset the weight from your working leg. This will keep you way more BALANCED. ๐Ÿ’ฏ ๊ซ‚ย แดแ‚…แด Sit on the bench and extend your feet out. ๐Ÿ’ฏ ๊ซ‚ย แดแ‚…แด Make sure that your working leg IS NOT directly underneath the smith machine bar! ๐Ÿ’ฏ ๊ซ‚ย แดแ‚…แด Make sure that the bar is over the OPPOSITE shoulder of your working leg. ๐Ÿ’ฏ ๊ซ‚ย แดแ‚…แด If youโ€™re working your RIGHT LEG, then the bar should be over your LEFT SHOULDER. ๐Ÿ’ฏ ๊ซ‚ย แดแ‚…แด Use a bar pad to protect your shoulders if you want to. ๐Ÿ’ฏ ๊ซ‚ย แดแ‚…แด Wherever your heels land, THATโ€™S where you plant your feet and stand up. ๐Ÿ’ฏ ๊ซ‚ย แดแ‚…แด Unhook the bar by either using both hands to do it -OR- hold onto the machine with one hand and use the other hand to unhook it. These are the 2 safest ways to do it! ๐Ÿ’ฏ ๊ซ‚ย แดแ‚…แด Place your non-working foot onto the bench behind you. **Again โ€” Make sure that your leg IS NOT directly underneath the bar.** You want to push it outward a little to protect your knees. ๐Ÿ’ฏ ๊ซ‚ย แดแ‚…แด To target your GLUTES, drive your non-working knee BACK while leaning slightly FORWARD. ๐Ÿ’ฏ ๊ซ‚ย แดแ‚…แด Your GOAL is to keep your FRONT SHIN completely VERTICAL throughout the entire movement! ๐Ÿ’ฏ ๊ซ‚ย แดแ‚…แด Hinge at your hips and keep your back flat. ๐Ÿ’ฏ ๊ซ‚ย แดแ‚…แด Your other GOAL is to get down to AT LEAST that 90ยฐ angle with your working leg. If not, thatโ€™s totally okay! But itโ€™s something to works towards. ๐Ÿ’ฏ ๊ซ‚ย แดแ‚…แด CONTROL the way down, and push through you HEEL on the way back up. ๐Ÿ’ฏ ๊ซ‚ย แดแ‚…แด The smith machine is the best machine to do this type of exercise because itโ€™s a fixed machine! The Smith machine is not built great for conventional form on compound movements. The conventional barbell back squat doesn't necessarily always have a perfectly straight up and down range of motion for everyone. Sometimes you have to balance it a little bit. And the inflexibility of a machine puts a lot of that stress into your spine. It's better if you are doing squats on the Smith machine to do a sort of hack squad variation with your feet out in front of the machine If you're doing bench press, it's better to do something like floor press with a limited range of motion because you don't want to go all the way deep with your shoulders flared out and you can't really use the arcing range of motion you need to on a normal bench press to keep your elbows in tight But personally, I would recommend never using a Smith machine. Dumbbells & barbells are way better #smithmachine #bodybuilding #fitness
