INIn 1923, Wilson Bentley captured the first-ever successful images, or "photomicrographs," of a single snowflake. ❄️
Through trial and error, Bentley perfected a technique to photograph crystals through a microscope, hoping to highlight the beauty of nature and the uniqueness of each flake.
"Under the microscope, I found that snowflakes were miracles of beauty; and it seemed a shame that this beauty should not be seen and appreciated by others,” Bentley later said. His work was published in @NatGeo magazine, showcasing the delicate beauty and geometry of snow crystals.

Since the molecules in the ice crystals are in a hexagonal structure, an arrangement that allows water molecules — each with an oxygen atom and two hydrogen atoms — to form in the most efficient way. They can form columns and even narrow needles. But the most common is a hexagonal plate. The basic reason is that when water freezes it forms a hexagon made of 6 molecules, which has a bent geometry and a polar design where oxygen is negative and hydrogen is positive.
The shapes of the snowflakes are influenced by the temperature and humidity of the atmosphere and are formed when the drops of water freezes on the particles of dust in the air. Depending on the temperature and humidity of the air where they form, the ice crest can grow in a multitude of different shapes.
The hexagonal fractal pattern is a geometric archetype that recurs at different scales of nature and of the universe, expressing a characteristic of balance and efficiency in the distribution of energy, whether in chemical, material, geological, biological, architectural and astronomical structures and dynamics.

The same goes with Antarctica’s Dry Valleys; it’s hella cold, but there’s barely any snow because of the low humidity.
Snowflakes form when water vapor freezes around microscopic suspended particles like dust and pollen and then absorb and freeze additional water vapor nearby. When temperatures are below 0°C, snowflakes tend to be tiny, but when temperatures are near 0°C, snowflakes are larger. However, if the ground temperature is above 5°C, snow generally won’t form.
There are two types of snow: wet and dry. Wet snow forms when temperatures are above 0°C. These snowflakes will melt around the edges and stick together, which makes them bigger and heavier than dry snow. When the air is dry and cool, snowflakes won’t melt and will stick together. These snowflakes are generally small and powdery.
During winter, snow can accumulate on the ground quite a lot but acts as a thermal insulator, keeping ground temperature warmer than the air temperature. It’s also a valuable reserve of freshwater!

We had one HELL of a snow storm last week in Montreal, perfect time to capture snowflakes melting under the microscope 💫
