Welcome to knitting 101: complete beginner For the chunky hat project you will learn: • how to cast on • knit & purl stitches • 1x1 ribbing • stockinette • decreasing stitches • weaving in ends • how to knit in the round • how to use a magic loop What you will need: • one ball of chunky weight yarn (check the label which should tell you which needle size it recommends, choose one that says US 10-11 or 6mm-8mm). As this is your first project you don’t need to invest in “good” yarn. Choose one that suits your budget and preferences. • one pair of US 11 or 8mm needles (I use Chiaogoo interchangeable needles but you can buy one pair with a long or short cord) if you choose a long cord you will need to use the magic loop method which will be explained in a video. • check second hand craft stores, thrift shops, buy nothing groups etc as chunky needles and yarn are often available there! If you’re in Denver check out @recreativedenver • a darning needle for weaving in ends • a stitch marker (you can make this out of string if you don’t want to buy one) I personally do not recommend straight needles, I haven’t used mine since I got them. I’ll start! Don’t worry about holding yarn in both hands right away! Focus on tension by dropping the strand you’re not using and stick to your usual knitting style. I’ve made plenty of sweaters this way and eventually transitioned to holding one strand in each hand, but there’s no rush to learn a new knitting method just to do stranded colourwork. The key is to stretch out the stitches you’ve just knit before switching colours. This keeps the float at the back loose enough for stretch! 🧶✨ Hope that was helpful! This style of English knitting is called flicking! I used to get horrible wrist pain because I tried this method but I was doing it all wrong. I would end up with swollen wrists and numbness in my lower arms for days so I finally sat down and analyzed what I was doing wrong. The problem was that my wrists were constantly moving in a repetitive motion which can ultimately lead to wrist pain or carpal tunnel😬 So here’s what I do now: 1) I move my entire arms towards each other which allows the needle to rotate because of how my thumbs are placed (no wrist movement) 2) then I move my right pointer finger slightly to wrap the yarn (again no wrist movement) 3) then with my left pointer finger I guide the next stitch forward so it’s ready to knit, sort of like a conveyer belt! Now I can knit for hours at a time every day (if my schedule allows) and I never have any pain in my wrists! I have tried just about every knitting method but for the speed that I’m able to get without any pain, this style is the winner for me😁 What style knitter are you? #englishknitting #knitting #knit

Seeing videos of people using all these methods to memorise knitting increases and how they lean, and I’m just wondering if anyone has tried just looking at the stitch? 😂 I’m being very simplistic here and referring to the stitch I’m working in the video which is a make one left and right leaning I can see if I’ve lifted my stitch wrong because it’ll leave a big gaping hole when I work it? On a raglan I just remember if I need to lean ‘away’ from the centre stitch or ‘towards’ it. It’s also a great technique for learning how to read your stitches. I usually find some of the rhyming and visual cues suggested more confusing. 🫤 Anyway I am actually curious about how we’re remembering our increases? #knit #knitwear #knittingtechnique #knitter #knitting
