1. ROOT WORD (Base Word)
A root word is the simplest form of a word. It carries the main meaning and cannot be divided further.
👉 It is the foundation of new words.
Examples:
Play → playful, playing
Help → helpful, helpless
Act → action, active
Read → reader, reading
2. SUFFIX (Ending Letters)
A suffix is a group of letters added at the end of a root word to: ✔ Change meaning
✔ Change grammatical form
✔ Change part of speech
Examples:
Kind → Kindness
Care → Careful
Teach → Teacher

A. Noun Suffixes

5. RULES FOR ADDING SUFFIXES
Rule 1: No Change in Root
👉 Add suffix directly
Care → Careful
Quick → Quickly
Rule 2: Drop Silent ‘e’
👉 When word ends in ‘e’, remove it
Make → Making
Write → Writing
Rule 3: Change ‘y’ into ‘i’
👉 When word ends in consonant + y
Happy → Happiness
Easy → Easily
Rule 4: Double the Last Consonant
👉 When pattern is CVC (Consonant-Vowel-Consonant)
