BJJ ATHLETES, WHAT YOU’RE MISSING OUT ON: Bodyweight this morning was 190lbs, and a full ROM squat at 370lbs for a double. I haven’t been practicing BJJ for long, and I’ve no wrestling background, but I’ve been told some interesting things: “You look strong, but you’re actually stronger,” “you just feel sturdy,” and two different people have said, “Your bones just feel harder than a normal person.” Full ROM back squats and deadlifts PROBABLY have a lot to do with the above. . . RELATIVE STRENGTH: this is the athletic adaptation that refers to the absolute voluntary expression of strength relative to your body weight. If you’re martial arts gym only has a smattering of kettlebells and dumbbells up to 50lbs, you can certainly get some good training, but you are not going to progress to an advanced level of relative strength. . . TYPE-IIA vs. TYPE-IIB FIBERS: many martial artists in a misunderstanding of strength training, develop more fast-twitch B fibers; staying in the development range of these types of fibers too long will make you unnecessarily have to go up a weight class without giving you the horsepower of someone that size. . . . . . . #strengthtraining #fitness #strengthandconditioning #supertraining #strength

I got a nice "care package" from my dear friend, @marksmellybell & @mbslingshot today. I am always grateful to be a part of Slingshot and the team. I have always worn their gear with pride because of what it means to me. I'm not sure when I officially became a member but I was always treated like a member from the 1st time Mark invited me to come train and podcast.(The "B" team days were great). I can honestly say that Mark Bell is one of the most genuine human beings I have ever been around 🙏 and I'm thankful for the friendship we have built. Mark has helped so many people in his lifetime, including myself. I'm thankful for how much Mark has selflessly helped me and helped guide me. He's for years been out saving people's lives,legitimately, for years now. I want to give my people their flowers while we both on this earth and Mark deserves more than flowers. Day 66 #runeveryday I’ve Been tracking my heart rate and working on nasal breathing via throwing on some @hostagetape. I believe nasal breathing while using the @maf_method from Phil Maffetone will work synergistically. My take on the Maffetone Method is to do 180 minus your age and that’s your target heart rate. For me I keep my heart rate at 135 ish. So far I’d say this makes up about 80% of my training maybe even a bit more. A week ago I was pleasantly surprised to get a message from Mark “Smelly” Bell ( @marksmellybell ). With a little luck and some quick juggling, I was able to sneak out to California for a 36-hour trip — and it all lined up perfectly. ㅤ Mark had been battling plantar fasciitis/achilles tendinitis for about 8 months. He’d tried many different interventions, but nothing was making a real difference. After just one SQUARE 1 session, things shifted — a few hours later, he went out for a run and said “my body and my heel are feeling great. I feel faster and better than ever. I feel awesome!”. We’re both fired up that he’s back to running again! ㅤ Getting the opportunity to work with an industry legend like Mark, who’s built a legacy on “Strength is never weakness, and weakness is never strength,” was an honor. He’s powerful, inspirational, genuine, and humble — even jumping behind the camera himself while I worked on his cameraman Ryan (such a cool dude). ㅤ I’m also grateful for the amazing people that The SQUARE 1 System continues to draw in — legends, professionals, and everyday humans all committed to growth and movement excellence. It has been said, the best program is the one your currently not doing. This refers to the fact that while following one stimulus you may be missing out on other ones. - This is how I stimulate without annihilate via doing my best to reasonably build Balance into my training. The key in my opinion is to stay healthy. We do this by thinking about what’s the opposite of a particular exercise or what’s the opposite of the stimulus. Compress, decompress, stable, unstable, internal, external, rotation, anti rotation, push, pull , high rep, low rep, light weight, heavy weight. When things like that are considered in a program you make the impact of that program exponentially more efficient. Treat your body kindly, don’t be mean or tough, do things right, don’t go too heavy or too fast, remember the gym is supposed to make you feel better not worse. And this isn’t just mentally, this is physically as well. Do not beat yourself up or beat yourself down. Take your time and find exercises that feel good and don’t hurt. #supertraining #domorebemore
