I’m over it, and I’ll say it straight up. The ‘coaches’ I see on social media using maces, really are clueless about mace training. Mechanically incorrect, too light, lifting not swinging, and just training/ teaching it mostly with an ineffective, misguided approach. So here, what to look for in them so you don’t listen, and what you should do instead to help yourself. Before that, for reference- if you are being taught by someone who swing heavy weight 20 reps, and look light, or just swing 30kg no problem. Don’t listen to them. They are amateur at best, and I have one very strong justification for this. There is a lack of coaches teaching this modality for a reason. And it is because this is more technical than lifting - it is skill-strength, and takes much more awareness/ hours of skill work - therefore it is technically impossible for someone to have accumulated enough experience to show someone else correctly. They are still a beginner. This is a 10-2 swing - it focuses on maintaining correct alignment, pushing the spinal rotation and staying fixed to the ground through a dynamic of centred motion, which most people lack, leak energy and especially when done heavy. So here is 3 main parts to analyse in this video on why these are MUST have features to take note of your technique. 1). Bicep to ears, pull over from the elbow through the lat. It is not an arms strength training exercise. 2). Feet rooted and fixed up the chain to the hips - this is the only way you don’t leak energy. 3). Spinal engine and rotation is how you generate force to generate enough force to swing heavy shit effectively. By having 1/2 locked in, you notice the difference - with a transition between an aggressive flow when heavy, that’s effortless from fluidity in swinging and brutality enforced over the shoulder - using the lats through leverage. Therefore, I prove it that if someone can’t do this heavy, and they are just another person on their fitness journey who started 6 months, if this is the standard, they are incompetent to teach. 🚨 Every Steel Mace Beginner MUST Master These 3 Switches It’s impossible to smoothly perform sequences of steel mace movements without knowing how to switch your mace from one hand to the other. That’s how you go from repping out Steel Mace Exercises to performing Steel Mace Flows. There are dozens of different switches, but there are 3 that should be mastered first. ✅ The Prayer Switch. This is the most basic and the most useful. It switches the mace from one hand to the other while in an over-under grip. ✅ The Sword Draw Switch. This is the more challenging switch that is used while in an over-over grip. ✅ Crossover Switch. This unique switch allows us to change the mace between hands while also shifting from an over-over grip into an over-under grip. I highly recommend learning these in order by doing drills and flows that specifically feature them. You’ll find lots of education on my YouTube channel, and I teach the 24 most important drills in my 8 Week Mace Flow Training Course. BOOM FridayFlow 💥 In this beginner steel mace workout we’ll work on the Ball Squat. This is a fun biceps movement that also teaches you a lot about the pendulum of the mace. 1. It starts with a Mace Back 360 towards the upper hand. 2. Pull the mace back to the center and let go of the upper hand. 3. Catch the globe or mace head in the palm of your hand and allow the mace to drop down. Keep the mace in the center. 4. Squat down and up. 5. Throw the globe back up and immediately catch the handle. You should catch it underneath the hand that was already there (Slide it up just before the catch). The Crouching Tiger Joust is a simple exercise to understand, but challenging to master. Here’s my advice for using this in your next functional strength workout: 1️⃣ Follow the videos steps so you understand the basic mechanics of this move. 2️⃣ Begin by practicing at 50% speed, then go to 75% speed, then finally 100% speed. 3️⃣ Use time-based sets instead of rep-based sets so you can focus on perfect technique. ❌ DO NOT lean forward into the joust or let go of the mace. Either of these can result in the annihilation of whatever’s in front of the mace. ✅ Instead, keep your weight evenly distributed between your feet and always control the mace. Steel mace training is basically controlled chaos. It looks simple until your shoulders, core, and grip realize they’re all on duty at the same time. The long, awkward weight forces your body to stabilize every rep. No hiding. No cheating. Just you trying not to get folded in half. Mobility sneaks in too. You’re moving weight around your body instead of straight up and down, so your shoulders and spine get stronger and looser at the same time. Stretching, but make it earned. Your core is working the entire time because the mace is constantly trying to pull you out of position. And your grip? Toast. In a good way. It’s weird. It’s humbling. It works.
