From Third Spaces ➡️ The Office ➡️ ____ 👀🔮?? Tracing the evolution of human connection reveals a fascinating thread 🧵 Throughout history, what made us feel a sense of connection and created a connective tissue between neighbors were public gathering places (squares, parks etc.) and so-called “Third Spaces”, as sociologist Ray Oldenburg coined. These are places beyond the home and the office – the library, church, and coffee shops, and play a vital role in fostering a sense of community and social connectedness. More recent history links the idea of third places to the development of modern coffee shops, which became especially popular in Europe as places for philosophers, intellectuals, and socialites to gather and exchange ideas in the 16th and 17th centuries. Then, with the industrial age came the office. Quickly, work turned into a new religion, and the office became the place where we’d spend most of our time. Fast forward to the present, technology has significantly changed how we interact and use third places. With the abrupt interruption of the traditional in-place 9-5 in 2020, Zoom became our new office. When working from the comfort of pajamas becomes indistinguishable from a pair of slacks, it becomes increasingly difficult to encourage people to leave the comfort of their homes and gather. The physical and social ergonomics of work look increasingly like sitting in solitude, connected by screens, tethered to keyboards — working together, alone. Now, after more than two years of remote-working wars, it feels like half of the workforce is being forced back into offices, while the other half is working from home — both feel lonely and disconnected from people and environments around them (declared a “Loneliness Epidemic” by the WHO) This year, our focus is on exploring the necessary social infrastructures and tools for this new way of living and working — out of office, and get you back out there! Read more about our focus in our newsletter via the link in our bio & join us for collectively exploring the future beyond the 9-5 office space.

Let’s talk about the influence the third space concept has had on fitness commerce 👇 Listen “third spaces” have been trending for a few years now, BUT if you’re not familiar, having a “third space” is having a space outside of work or home, so like a coffee shop, a gym. This was a concept coined by sociologist Ray Oldenburg in his 1989 book, The Great Good Place and later popularized by Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz who modeled the chain’s locations, particularly in the ‘90s and 2000s, around this concept. I honestly think this has stayed in the cultural zeitgeist for so long due to that post-pandemic collective craving for real community in an era of remote work and AI Forget a male loneliness epidemic, we’re all lonely out here man Now you know the fitness scene has become hyper-social and community-focused as run clubs have “replaced dating apps” (can we go one video in this series without talking about running? So far, not likely) and with the rise of “sober raves” And brands within fitness and wellness have attempted to navigate marketing in this saturated world, we’ve seen retail turned into full-on community hubs Anecdotally, I’ve seen an increase in startups centered around this concept at my brand studio @brandtcreative.co and you’ve likely seen these “wellness clubs” or retail store/community hybrids crop up in the larger cities It’s all about blending community and commerce seamlessly. A surge of fitness and wellness brands are making spaces that mix engagement and experience that somehow make shopping feel secondary. HOWEVER - as consumers, we’re becoming wise to this marketing play and are longing for true community outside of commerce - or, what some are calling “the fourth space” Which is what I’m talking about tomorrow - stay tuned. I genuinely think the third place is something that’s lacking in a lot of people’s lives. Although there are places like coffee shops, malls, etc.. You typically have to spend money, which sort of defeats the meaning of a third place. But maybe the real third place was the friends we made along the way. In India, a particular kind of third space abounds. This space is perhaps the epitome of a third space— free, accessible, everywhere…. And yet it was never intentionally created to be experienced that way. A third place or “3rd space” is a social environment that is neither home (the first space) nor work (the second space), where people can gather, interact, and build community. Coined by urban sociologist Ray Oldenburg, these public places provide neutral ground for spontaneous conversation and connection, fostering a sense of belonging and supporting civic engagement.
