CODay-to-Night timelapse tutorial with @dylanzchen: Step-by-step guide to elevate your #LostInCity entries!
“In my photography, I enjoy experimenting and pushing my limits. In this case, I wanted to explore time-lapses, and that is when I discovered this idea from one of my favorite photographers, which inspired this reel. If you are interested in trying this technique yourself, I believe the following steps will be helpful:
1) Composition is my top priority. I focus on minimalism, often featuring a single subject or landmark. For detailed projects, I research my ideal location and composition in advance.
2) Check the weather and choose a day with a dynamic sky to capture changing atmospheres over time. Two to three hours is usually enough. The PhotoPills app is excellent for planning this.
3) I mainly shoot digital on the Nikon Zf, and the following are my go-to settings for day-to-night time-lapse:
Interval: 6s
Number of photos: 600 as a minimum to capture (from sunset to night)
Mode: Aperture Priority
ISO: 400-800
F Stop: f5.6
Manual focus
IBIS off
4) Ideally, use a camera with a built-in intervalometer.
5) Wide lenses are better for capturing vast cityscapes. In this case, I used a 24mm. You can always crop it during post-production if you want to reframe it.
6) A sturdy tripod, ideally one where you can hang a weight, to ensure there is no chance the tripod would be moved or knocked.
7) Have a power source to ensure the camera does not run out of battery during the timelapse.
8) You can shoot a time-lapse in JPEG since post-processing hundreds of RAW images can be tedious.
9) Post-production is where you can experiment with the slices, and I used Premiere Pro.
10) My color palette uses predominantly blue and cooler tones. A day-to-night time-lapse perfectly encapsulates my style as we get a variety of shades of blue throughout the day mixed in with subtle hints of orange and purple during sunset - great complimentary colors to pair with blue.”
