DR✅Tonsils are 2 meat-ball liked structures at the back of your child's throat.
✅ Sore throat is a common symptom for upper respiratory infections (URI) in children.
✅ Remember parents , URI is common in children and that's why URI is also called the Common Cold. Children can experience between 3-10 episodes in a year ( that's rougly around 3-10 sore throats in a year !).
✅ Tonsils can swell up when your child is sick because they are part of the immune system to help fight off the virus or germs and can shrink back to their normal size after the infection.
✅ Large to tonsils are not necessarily a problem if they aren't causing any problems like difficulty breathing, swallowing or sleep disturbances.
✅ Your child can get recurrent sore throats whether their tonsils are large or not. Size doesn't matter.
✅ Tonsillectomy is indicated in children who have very frequent SEVERE sore throats or have difficulty in breathing, swallowing or sleeping.
✅ Doctors may recommend tonsillectomy if your child has 7 or more episodes in a year , 5 or more episodes in each of 2 years or 3 or more episodes in each 3 years.
✅ Clinical trials and observational studies have shown that tonsillectomy may be no better than taking a wait-and-see approach for children who have few throat infections in a year or children who just have mild to moderate throat infections.
✅ For some children, tonsillectomy can greatly improve their quality of life.
✅ Taking out the tonsils can mean less severe sore throats and less frequent sore throat in these children but they can still have sore throats.
Any decision for surgery is best to discuss with your ENT doctor.

As a mom of two and a PA in ENT & Facial Surgery, l’ve experienced both. And let me tell you, while childbirth pain is intense and powerful, the tonsillectomy recovery as an adult is a different beast entirely. Here’s the breakdown (and why adults have it worse):
• It’s a “Raw” Wound: When you have a baby, your body is designed to heal. After a tonsillectomy, you have two gaping wounds in your throat that are left open to heal on their own. Every single swallow feels like fire.
• The Pain is Constant & Prolonged:
Childbirth is a sprint. Tonsillectomy recovery is a marathon.
The pain can peak around day 5 and linger for weeks, making it hard to eat, drink, or even talk.
• Larger Tissues, More Scarring:
Adults’ tonsils are bigger and have more scarring from years of fighting infections.
This makes the surgical site larger and the post-op pain more intense. • Referred Ear Pain: The same nerves that go to your throat also go to your ears, so the pain can radiate and feel like a severe earache on top of everything else.
