Db rollbacks or rolling tricep extensions are an old school powerlifting staple that are commonly ignored today. 👀 They’re one of my favorite tricep exercises to include in a peaking block when the goal is minimizing fatigue because they provide so much bang for you buck, allowing for all three heads of the tricep to be engaged at different ranges of motion from just one exercise. Here’s why it’s so valuable: 🔹 Builds lockout strength This is the biggest benefit. The rollback heavily targets the long head of the triceps, which is crucial for finishing presses. If you ever miss near lockout on bench, this directly attacks that weakness. Combines stretch + extension Unlike standard skullcrushers, you: • Lower the weight back (deep stretch) • Then “roll” and extend That stretch under load → extension combo creates more tension and fiber recruitment, especially in the long head. More joint-friendly than skullcrushers Because of the rollback motion: • Less elbow stress • Smoother transition at the bottom • Easier to keep tension on the triceps instead of dumping it into joints A lot of lifters who get elbow pain from skullcrushers can do these pain-free. Getting the elbows back behind the body in that extended position is the only way I feel that active tension. I used to do it this way but got away from it. Back to it now! Elbows locked in, slight lean forward, full stretch/squeeze. You’re not swinging a sledgehammer, you’re sculpting. 2. Overhead Dumbbell Extensions✔️ This one opens up the long head—gives that meaty look from the back. Maintain an upright posture and let the stretch do the talking. Don’t rush it. If it ain’t burning, you ain’t earning. 3. Dips (Bodyweight or Weighted)✔️ Now we finish with power. Keep the reps clean—slight lean in, elbows tucked, full range of motion. These built my arms before I ever touched a machine. You master dips? You WILL see results.
