Here’s why the blanket claim doesn’t really apply. 1. Inflammation from sugar is mostly a metabolic overload problem In non-athletes, high sugar intake often means: Excess calories, Chronically elevated blood glucose, Repeated insulin spikes Sugar being converted to fat (especially in the liver) This leads to:Increased visceral fat, Activation of inflammatory pathways (TNF-α, IL-6, CRP). Insulin resistance. Key point: inflammation arises when sugar intake exceeds the body’s ability to use it. 2. Endurance athletes rapidly dispose of glucose Endurance athletes have: High mitochondrial density, Elevated GLUT-4 transporters in muscle (insulin-independent glucose uptake), Large glycogen storage capacity. High insulin sensitivity When they consume sugar: Glucose is immediately shuttled into working muscles. It is burned for ATP or stored as glycogen. Blood glucose returns to baseline quickly There is no prolonged hyperglycemia to trigger inflammatory signaling. 3. Exercise itself is anti-inflammatory Regular endurance training: Lowers baseline CRP, Reduces visceral fat (a major inflammatory driver), Increases anti-inflammatory cytokines (e.g., IL-10), Improves gut barrier integrity Even though acute exercise raises some inflammatory markers, this is: Short-lived, Part of tissue repair and adaptation. Followed by a net anti-inflammatory effect So sugar consumed around training occurs in an anti-inflammatory physiological environment. 4. Sugar during endurance exercise can reduce inflammation During long sessions: Low glycogen increases cortisol and inflammatory stress, Carbohydrate intake lowers cortisol, Maintains immune function, Reduces muscle damage markers. 5. The insulin response is different in trained athletes In endurance athletes. Smaller insulin response for the same sugar load. Faster insulin clearance. Less oxidative stress. Insulin itself is anti-inflammatory when cells are insulin-sensitive. #tritraining #triathlete
