Here are 7 symptoms I see often in women navigating this stage of life: 1. Mood changes or unexpected sadness Some women experience waves of sadness, low motivation, or feeling unlike themselves. Hormonal shifts can affect neurotransmitters that regulate mood. 2. Anxiety or feeling emotionally overwhelmed Things that once felt manageable may suddenly feel heavier or harder to process. Many women describe feeling more sensitive to stress. 3. Sleep disruption and middle-of-the-night wake ups Difficulty falling asleep or waking up around 2–4 AM is very common during perimenopause. 4. Joint aches or body stiffness Estrogen plays a role in joint health. As levels fluctuate, some women notice new stiffness, soreness, or aches. 5. Irritability or sudden bursts of anger Mood swings or feeling easily frustrated can happen when hormones are fluctuating. 6. Brain fog or memory changes Forgetting names, misplacing things, or needing to write everything down can feel frustrating but is very common in midlife. 7. Skin, hair, and body changes Things like hair thinning, dry skin, dry eyes, heart palpitations, or digestive changes can also appear during this transition. I began experiencing my first perimenopause symptoms… I began waking up multiple times a night — sometimes hot and sweaty, sometimes needing to go to the bathroom again and again. And at first I couldn’t understand why it was happening. For a while I kept it to myself. There was a little shame around it, and part of me didn’t want to admit that my body might be entering perimenopause. But eventually I started noticing patterns. Stress, lifestyle rhythms, and even things like drinking wine with friends were affecting my sleep far more than I realized. That was one of the moments I began understanding something important: Perimenopause isn’t your body failing. It’s your body asking you to live differently. When I started supporting my nervous system, changing some habits, and creating rhythms that my body could actually thrive in, things began to shift. These choices can feel countercultural in the world we live in today — but learning to care for our bodies differently in this stage of life can change everything.
