SA'Holographic' Display for Miniature Projects!
I’ve been playing around with adding holographic displays into my builds and this uses the classic Pepper’s Ghost illusion, which looks seriously cool in person! It's super simple and can even be done with any screen or phone if you don't want to jump straight into electronics or coding.

What I Used:
- ST7735 1.8" TFT Display Module
- ESP32 Development Board
- Dupont Jumper Wires
- 5V USB Power Pack
- 3D Printed Enclosure (STL files coming soon)
- Transparent acetate sheet or plastic film
The Process:
Step 1:

Modified code from → bitbank2/AnimatedGIF GitHub
Step 2:
Wired the display to the ESP32 using this pinout (no soldering needed): VCC → 3v3, GND → GND, CS → 5, RESET → 4, AO → 2, SOA → 23, SCK → 18, LED → 3v3
Step 3:
Created an animated GIF (128x160px for my screen) and converted it using the tool suggested in tutorial.
Step 4:
Uploaded the modified code to the ESP32 using Arduino IDE. Note: You may need to tweak the User_Setup.h file based on your board.
Step 5:
3D printed the enclosure and slotted the screen in place.
Step 6:
Cut a piece of transparent film and mounted it at a 45° angle in front of the screen to get that floating hologram effect.

Custom 2024 Halloween Diorama…with GHOSTS!
I have a friend (no socials) who loves making dioramas and I pitched him a concept of including flying ghosts in a graveyard diorama using an old illusion called “Pepper’s Ghost.” The same technique is used in Disney’s Haunted Mansion effects! It took a lot of testing and collaboration but we got it to work! The end result is better than we imagined.
The ghosts are not added to the scene later, those are actually visible in-person, flying around in this custom portable tabletop graveyard box!

INThis effect is a modern version of the classic Pepper’s Ghost illusion, a technique that’s been used in theaters and museums for over a century. The setup uses a clear glass or acrylic panel positioned at a precise angle so it can reflect objects off to the side while still allowing you to see straight through it.
In the video, the reflected pens line up perfectly with the real hand behind the glass, which is what sells the illusion. When the angles are correct, your brain assumes the reflected object is physically in the same space as the hand, even though it’s actually coming from a separate area outside the camera’s view.
The flickering lights are the trick that makes it feel like the glass is changing states. When the lighting is brighter behind the panel, the glass looks nearly transparent. But when the background dims and the reflected side becomes brighter, the glass suddenly behaves like a mirror, making the reflected pens appear to materialize in midair like they’re part of the real world.
