GRThe 808 didn’t come from a modern studio… it came from failure.
In 1980, Roland released the TR-808, a drum machine designed to imitate real drums. But it didn’t convince anyone: it sounded artificial, weird… different. It was a commercial failure.
What no one realized at the time is that this “mistake” had massive potential.
Underground producers started using that deep, long kick, tweaking it, distorting it… creating something completely new. That’s how the 808 was born—the sound that now dominates hip hop, trap, and modern music.
A rejected sound that ended up defining generations.
It all started with a machine nobody wanted.

Today’s the day to pay tribute to one of the most legendary drum machines in music history - the Roland TR-808. In this video, you’re watching (and hearing) one of my original TR-808 units doing what it does best. I programmed a groove consisting of an A and B pattern, along with a fill - also in two parts - to show a bit of what this beautiful machine can do.
The 808 really needs no introduction. Its influence is everywhere - from early hip hop and electro to house, techno, and modern pop. There’s a reason why it’s still celebrated decades after its release.
I’m more than grateful I picked this one up back when prices were still reasonable. Long before the collector hype went wild, I was already building my setup piece by piece - 99% of my gear was bought that way.
For this recording, I kept things simple and classic. The TR-808 was routed through a Mackie 1202 VLZ Pro mixer, enhanced with a touch of reverb from the Boss RV-3 reverb/delay pedal, and then rounded off with a bit of punch from the Alesis Micro Limiter. Just pure, raw analog energy captured live.
