CHToday is adoptee Remembrance Day. It’s strategically before we head into November when a lot of people focus on adoption awareness. It’s a day to recognize the complexity of adoption. A day to sit in the loss and grief.
At its best, adoption is nuanced. It exists because of brokenness.
There will always be an ache in my heart that these kids needed an adoptive family. That their birth parents are missing these moments with them. Their first steps, their first lost tooth, their report cards, and all the milestones in between.
But I also hold this grief intertwined with gratitude. Because for every heart wrenching loss, there is also joy and redemption in this story. There is immense privilege in getting to be their safe place. And I’m so thankful that God rewrites ashes and loss into beauty and wholeness.
Not always in this lifetime, but we cling to the promise that broken things will not be final things, and press on in processing ALL the emotions adoption holds.

THIt’s adoption awareness / abolition month and here’s something I wanted to say around suicidal ideation (SI) and self harm (SH).
When we realise that SH and SI come from a part of us that loves us and wants to protect us, we can have much more compassion for ourselves and begin to give those wounded parts of us what they need.
The goal isn’t to get rid of these parts; I don’t think they ever truly ‘leave’ us… but creating a space for these parts to be heard and understood can help us more than trying to suppress them. It doesn’t mean we have to do what they’re urging us to do. It means we get to learn what our unmet needs are from them to meet them more. It means we have more choice.

CHA few days ago in Hong Kong, a family of wild boars passing through a residential area.
They were searching for food.
Six were captured and euthanized.
Two parents. Four young.
Not aggression. Not a threat.
Just survival, in the wrong place.
We build.
They adapt.
And then we remove them.
Different animals.
Same story.
幾天前，在香港，
一個野豬家庭經過了住宅區。
牠們只是出來尋找食物。
其中六隻被捕捉並被人道處理。
兩隻成年的，四隻年幼的。
不是因為攻擊，
也不是因為威脅。
只是生存，
卻出現在錯誤的地方。
我們建造。牠們適應。
然後我們將牠們移除。
不同的動物，同樣的故事。
