That is a fascinating look at ancient engineering! The video demonstrates a Lewis Bolt (or simply a "Lewis"), a heavy-duty lifting device used since Roman times to hoist large, heavy stones. How It Works The tool consists of three metal pieces: two outer wedges and a central "key" piece. The Hole: A dovetail-shaped hole (wider at the bottom than at the top) is carved into the top of the stone block. The Insertion: The two outer wedges are inserted into the hole first, followed by the central key piece which pushes them outward. The Lock: A shackle is bolted through the tops of all three pieces. As the stone is lifted, the wedges are pulled upward, causing them to flare out and grip the sides of the hole even tighter. The Result: This allows massive blocks to be lifted by a single point without needing ropes or chains wrapped around the entire stone, which would make it impossible to set them flush against each other in an arch or wall.
