Bells have been used in many ways over time in churches, monasteries, factories, and schools!
As public education became formalized, bells were often used to help organize the day! They served as a tool to signal the start and end of the school day, as well as signaling lunch breaks!
Today, Chisholm 5th Graders came to visit the Heritage Center to learn about the history of northwest Oklahoma, and they got to kick off our tour of the Village by ringing our big school bell at Turkey Creek! 😄
Today, school bells are still very much in use, but, they are typically automated instead of manually operated like the one shown here!
