Calhoun, 1970 yılında sosyal davranışların yoğun nüfus koşulları ve aşırı konfor ortamında nasıl değişeceğini incelemek amacıyla ünlü deneyini gerçekleştirmiştir. “Evren 25” olarak adlandırılan bu çalışmada, yiyecek, su, barınak ve güvenlik gibi tüm temel ihtiyaçların karşılandığı, doğal düşmanlardan arındırılmış, fiziksel ve psikolojik stres faktörlerinin minimuma indirildiği özel bir çevre tasarlanmıştır. Bu ortama dört çift fare (iki dişi ve iki erkek) yerleştirilmiş ve bireylerin davranışsal süreçleri gözlemlenmiştir.
Deneyin başlangıç aşamasında fareler yüksek bir üreme oranı göstermiş, nüfus hızla artmıştır. Ancak yaklaşık 315. günden itibaren üreme oranında belirgin bir düşüş gözlenmiştir. Popülasyon 600 bireye ulaştığında ise yeni sosyal dinamikler ortaya çıkmıştır: belirgin bir hiyerarşik yapı, bazı bireylerin izolasyonu ve “sefiller” (the miserable) olarak tanımlanan sosyal açıdan dışlanmış bir grup oluşmuştur.
Güçlü erkek fareler, zayıf bireylere yönelik saldırgan davranışlar sergilemiş; bu durum erkeklerin önemli bir kısmında psikolojik çöküşe yol açmıştır. Dişi farelerin bir kısmı yavru bakımını reddetmiş, hatta saldırgan eğilimler göstermeye başlamıştır. Bu süreç sonucunda yavru ölümleri %100’e ulaşmış, üreme tamamen durmuştur. Gıda bolluğuna rağmen yamyamlık, anormal saldırganlık ve homoseksüel davranışlar gibi sıra dışı tutumlar gözlemlenmiştir.
Deneyin başlamasından yaklaşık iki yıl sonra son fare doğmuş, 1973 yılına gelindiğinde popülasyon tamamen yok olmuştur. Önemli bir bulgu olarak, Calhoun’un bu deneyi farklı koşullarda 25 kez tekrarlamasına rağmen her defasında benzer sonuçlar elde edilmiş; yani toplumun kaçınılmaz biçimde çöküşe sürüklendiği görülmüştür.
