"I just couldn't function. I knew there was something really badly wrong." Dr Bern Hard suffered a spontaneous CSF leak while abroad for a work conference - and it instantly changed everything. What followed was months of tests and uncertainty, before she underwent surgery. There is little understanding and awareness of CSF leaks - and this is something we are desperate to change. Our new documentary launches on 03 December and will be available to watch on our YouTube channel. Please watch, share, and help us spread awareness of this rare condition. #csfleak #neurology #chronicillness

When your nose runs like a faucet, everyone assumes ‘allergies’ or ‘a cold’… but sometimes it is neither. There is a rare condition called a CSF leak, where the fluid that cushions your brain actually drips out of your nose. It is usually: • Clear, watery, and constant • Worse when you lean forward or strain • Often just from one nostril This is not the typical thick, yellow mucus you see with most infections. A CSF leak can raise your risk of serious infections like meningitis, so it is not one to ignore. If your ‘runny nose’ is nonstop clear water from one side, especially after head trauma, sinus surgery, or a bad fall, that is a good reason to get checked out. #csfleak #healthtips #runnynose #medicalfacts

A CSF leak warrior went in for a blood patch. She had painful patches and myelograms prior to this experience. As all the healthcare workers in the OR was preparing the instruments and prepping for the blood patch, she laid on the table. She said, “I’m scared.” Everyone in the room stopped what they were doing and stood near her. “Everything is going to be okay,” they reassured her. She had never had such a compassionate experience before. Thank you to all those workers who listened and comforted us. Even the small moments make a big difference.

I had a CSF leak around this time of year, 2 years ago. It happened because I was having fluid pouring out of my nose for weeks every time I moved a certain way (yes, ew); it was like a water faucet gone awry. An ENT had me do a CT myelogram (my first of what would eventually be around 9 or 10, because we can’t get an MRI of my spine), and it made things way worse: I ended up with one of those mythological CSF leak headaches. (Since then, my CF team recommended an ENT they prefer a lot more, and they were right.) Anyways, for those who don’t know, they’re like a headache that’s impossible to suffer through and doesn’t go away. It hurts worse when you sit up, and so I was told to go to the ER for a blood patch (where we couldn’t get a bed for most of the day and night, but they also didn’t have a place for me to lay down, so OW at sitting up). It sucked a lot, but then I was admitted to the CF floor and had a blood patch by the next day. I hate the ER and avoid it to almost pathological levels (which is sometimes a problem because I don’t go when I “should”, but I feel like waiting it out and seeing a specialist has helped me more, barring an organ bursting.) One day I’ll change that opinion maybe, but so far… I hate the ER and do not believe in her. She needs to do some soul searching. A blood patch feels kind of like getting an epidural (which feels kind of like getting a myelogram)… so the solution felt a lot like the cause. I am lucky that it was a freak thing (for me) and another sinus surgery a couple of months later helped some of the headaches and nose stuff all the more (I was culturing a lot of mold up there). Maybe for this new year, my memories will be less weird.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 🫀🧠 This cine MRI sequence captures the rhythmic pulsations of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the brain’s third ventricle, where the pineal gland (third eye) is located. The oscillations are primarily driven by the cardiac cycle: each heartbeat generates arterial pressure waves that displace CSF, causing subtle mechanical motion around midline structures like the pineal gland. Superimposed on this are slower, larger-amplitude movements influenced by respiration. Deep inhalation draws CSF upward into the cranial ventricles, while exhalation reverses the flow. Together, these heartbeat- and breath-synchronized CSF dynamics help circulate nutrients, remove waste, and maintain intracranial pressure, illustrating the profound physiological heart-brain connection. Various breathwork techniques, including those taught by Joe Dispenza @drjoedispenza and ones rooted in yogic practices like bandhas and pranayama, involve muscle contractions and directed breathing to accelerate and “squeeze” CSF upward toward the third ventricle. According to Joe Dispenza’s theory, this process applies pressure to the pineal gland’s micro crystals, triggering a piezoelectric effect that can lead to profound altered states and mystical experiences. 👉🏻 Comment 𝗖𝗔𝗟𝗠 below for breathing tips and breathing exercises. Diagnostic Delay Stats for SIH / Spinal CSF Leak: Average time to diagnosis: 12–24 months (Multiple studies and patient surveys report delays of 1–2 years on average.) Misdiagnosis is extremely common: Many patients are initially told they have migraines, anxiety, depression, chronic fatigue, or even fibromyalgia before a CSF leak is considered. A study published in Cephalalgia (2016) found over 50% of SIH patients were misdiagnosed before the correct diagnosis was made. Multiple rounds of imaging are often needed: Even high-quality MRIs or CT myelograms frequently fail to detect the leak site, which delays treatment further. • One study reported that in up to 60–80% of SIH cases, the leak location remains unidentified on imaging. Under-recognition by physicians is a major barrier. • Many neurologists and ER doctors are not trained to recognize hallmark symptoms like orthostatic headache or brain sag on MRI. #csfleakawareness #spinalleak #medicalgaslighting #invisibleillness #undiagnosedillness #spoonie #chronicpainwarrior #chronicpain #misdiagnosed #chronicillnessawareness #neurologicalsymptoms #healingjourney #chronicallykarissa #csfleak #leakweek2025 #csfleak #leakweek @spinalcsfleakusa @csfleakassociation
