Wong notes the semiconductor field requires global collaboration on research to advance and is optimistic about future innovation post “Moore’s Law” as societal needs will drive new breakthroughs. Kharis Templeman is a research fellow at the Hoover Institution and program manager of the Hoover Project on Taiwan in the Indo-Pacific. H.-S. Philip Wong is a professor of electrical engineering and the Willard R. and Inez Kerr Bell professor in the Stanford University School of Engineering, where he is the founding faculty director of its SystemX Alliance and director of the Stanford Nanofabrication Facility. I’ve seen this pattern again and again. The kids who aren’t the standouts early are often the ones chasing the leaders for years. Always trying to keep up. Always trying to prove themselves. Over time, they develop a quiet edge — not an unhealthy chip, but a deep internal drive. That was me growing up. I wasn’t the best player at 9 or 10. I was usually the one trying to catch up. And it wasn’t until much later that things finally started to click. That’s why the future doesn’t need to be managed at 10 — it needs to be protected. Kids don’t quit hockey because it’s hard. They quit when it stops being fun. If you want to protect their love for the game, focus on a few simple things: ✔️ Celebrate effort, not outcomes. Praise how hard they try, not goals, points, or rankings. ✔️ Let the rink be their space. Resist over-correcting after every practice or game — sometimes they just want to play. ✔️ Make hockey bigger than hockey. Laugh on the way home, play mini-games, and remind them it’s okay to love the game without pressure. Protect their love for the game now — because you never really know who they’re becoming.
