“When the deportations started, my mother would carry me in her arms, covering her Star of David, so that the people would not see she was a Jewish woman.” — Peter Mayer Peter Mayer was not yet a year old when the Holocaust reached his home in northern Transylvania, a region transferred to Hungary in 1940. After Hungary allied with Nazi Germany, deportations intensified. In 1944, more than 130,000 Jews from northern Transylvania were deported to Auschwitz in just a matter of weeks. Peter’s father was taken into Hungarian forced labor service, where Jewish men were sent to camps or attached to military units without weapons. Many did not survive. Peter and his mother were hidden for months in a basement by a Hungarian woman who risked her life to protect them. He was the only child of his age in his area who survived. Today, Peter shares the story he learned from his parents so that this history is not forgotten. “I never got to say goodbye to my family. My heart is the cemetery.” — Sally Muschel Sally Muschel was 11 or 12 years old when her parents made the impossible decision to send her away in 1939. Sick with typhoid, she was sent east and later placed on a transport to Siberia, where she survived for three years. After the war, Sally learned that her father had been shot by the Nazis for refusing to head the Judenrat in Dombrowa, and her mother was murdered in Auschwitz. She never saw them again. Hundreds of thousands of Jews fled or were deported east into the Soviet Union during the war, where many endured extreme conditions, forced labor, and displacement to survive. Now 100 years old, Sally recently shared her story with students at New Utrecht High School in Brooklyn, ensuring that her family’s memory lives on. Uri Hirsch was born in Hamburg, Germany, shortly before the outbreak of WWII. His father was arrested and sent to a concentration camp, and the family was told he would only be released if they agreed to leave Germany. In 1939, they fled to England. A few years later, after a relative reached out to Eleanor Roosevelt, the family was granted permission to immigrate to the United States in 1943. Between 1933 and 1939, thousands of Jewish families were forced to leave Nazi Germany under similar conditions, often losing their homes, livelihoods, and communities. Uri’s story reflects both the urgency of escape and the fragile chances of survival. Today, he shares his family’s story so others can understand what was lost and what it took to rebuild. “Every Holocaust survivor’s story is a love story; the love of life, family and freedom.” — Andy Réti Andy Réti was just two years old when his mother and grandmother were forced from their home in Budapest into the Jewish ghetto. His father and grandfather had already been taken to a forced labor camp. Andy was liberated from the Budapest ghetto on January 18, 1945, by the Soviet Red Army. Nearly 70,000 Jews were confined there under brutal conditions during the final months of the war. Andy survived thanks to the courage and determination of his mother and grandmother. After the war, the family immigrated to Canada, where Andy later dedicated himself to Holocaust education. Through his writing and speaking, he continues to share his family’s story so future generations will remember. In March 1943, as Jews in Bulgaria were being sent to Nazi death camps, they were miraculously saved from death. Religious leaders within the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, as well as ordinary citizens, refused to allow their Jewish neighbors to be deported. Rika and Leon Levi were two of the 50,000 Bulgarian Jews who never boarded the trains for the camps. Several years ago they shared their stories with the WJC. Both have since passed away since giving this interview. It is critical that we know the facts. Find more at www.AboutHolocaust.org

During WWII, a 4’11” social worker helped save 2,500 Jewish children from the Warsaw Ghetto. She smuggled them out in toolboxes, ambulances, and secret tunnels—giving them new identities so they could survive. She hid their real names in glass jars buried beneath an apple tree, hoping to reunite them with their families after the war. When the Gestapo caught her, they tortured her and broke her legs—but she never revealed a single name. Her name was Irena Sendler. Repost @theforgotten_age #holocaust #children #warsaw

Spring 1944. Szeged, Hungary. After Germany occupied Hungary on March 19, a ghetto was established in the city. Vera recalls a 2-meter wooden wall built around their house. 17 people shared 3 rooms. There was only one bathroom and one kitchen. She describes daily life inside the ghetto under those conditions. If you’re teaching the Holocaust, recorded survivor testimony can help students examine how ghettoization shaped daily life. You can access classroom materials at the link in our bio.
