Hit the numbers… or protect the people? Results matter. Deadlines. Targets. Deliverables. Without them, nothing moves. But relationships matter too. Trust. Respect. Support. The feeling that someone has your back when things get hard. If you chase results and ignore relationships, you might win short term. But over time, people disengage. They stop giving their best. On the other hand, if you focus only on relationships and avoid hard conversations, performance starts dropping. And resentment starts building slowly. Leadership is knowing when to push and when to pause. When to demand more. And when to hold back. The goal isn’t to choose one. It’s to understand the cost of neglecting either. A big part of leadership is setting clear expectations for tough conversations. Before diving in, tell your team exactly how you want the conversation to end. It shows you’re serious. It shows you care. And it sets the tone for real progress not just talk. For example: “By the end of this conversation, John, I want us to make sure this doesn’t happen again. And if you need support from me or the team, just ask.” It’s firm, but it’s also supportive. That balance is what builds trust and drives change.
