This animal is an extinct genus of large arthrodire fish that existed during the Late Devonian period, about 382–358 million years ago. Dunkleosteus was a pelagic fish inhabiting open waters, and one of the first vertebrate apex predators of any ecosystem. The most recent and extensive studies on the body shape and size of D. terrelli producing estimated lengths of approximately 3.4 metres (11 ft) for typical adults and 4.1 metres (13 ft) for exceptionally large individuals of this species. The air must be so clean 🍃😍 Check out all the photos for some amazing facts about a world defining era Carboniferous Period, fifth interval of the Paleozoic Era, succeeding the Devonian Period and preceding the Permian Period. In terms of absolute time, the Carboniferous Period began approximately 358.9 million years ago and ended 298.9 million years ago. Its duration of approximately 60 million years makes it the longest period of the Paleozoic Era and the second longest period of the Phanerozoic Eon. The rocks that were formed or deposited during the period constitute the Carboniferous System. The name Carboniferous refers to coal-bearing strata that characterize the upper portion of the series throughout the world. #carboniferous #prehistoricworld #prehistoric #arthropleura #devonian #oldearth #youngearth

The Devonian seas were an incredible period for life. There were numerous species of corals, bryozoans, brachiopods, and nautiloids. Fish were becoming incredibly diverse, ranging from early jawed fish, to the heavily armored placoderms, and even some of the earliest “shark-like” fish. Even the first tetrapods were beginning to clamber their way on to land. I love dioramas like these because they’re always this EXPLOSION of life exhibiting the unique, strange, and beautiful life in such a small, simple space. . . . . . #devonian #placoderm #cladoselache #ammonite #bryozoan #corals #trilobite #tetrapod #dunkleosteus #fossils

I got the incredible opportunity to see the ORIGINAL fossils of Tiktaalik: the fossil “caught in the act” of evolution. While many museums have an exhibit or display dedicated to this ancestral tetrapod, all of their materials are casts of the fossil remains, with the actual fossils stored in the Canadian Nature Museum in Ottawa. But recently these precious fossils went on loan to the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences for display, including the HOLOTYPE (the specimen for which the species is described from). In addition to the holotype, dozens of other incredible fossils from the Devonian were on display. This included other specimens of Tiktaalik, giant predatory fish, armored fish, and other early tetrapods from Pennsylvania! The name Tiktaalik (Inuktitut ᑎᒃᑖᓕᒃ) roughly translates to “large freshwater fish” in the Inuit language. This is a very fitting and respectful name as the specimens come from rocks on Ellesmere Island in Nunavut, Canada. These incredible fossils are only on display until the end of September so go visit the @acadnatsci as soon as you can! . . . . . #tiktaalik #fishapod #tetrapod #fossils #evolution #missinglink #devonian #walkingwithmonsters

Tucson is a remarkable location known for its geological and paleontological significance. The fossil specimens from Paleopix are particularly impressive, with the Asaphellus mortality plate providing a striking example of ancient ecological events. This fossil assemblage offers valuable insight into the conditions and environmental factors that contributed to mass mortality during that period. Could this strange amphibian be our ancestor? Meet Hynerpeton, an evolutionary pioneer from the Devonian period, who took some of the first steps on land. After a century of solitude, our lonely protagonist finds a mate. But romance in this era is a deadly game. Their vulnerable eggs must be laid in water, attracting predators like Hyneria, the 5-meter "lungfish from hell," which can use its powerful fins to "walk" ashore with terrifying speed. This was an age of giants, not just vertebrates. As Hynerpeton's descendants evolved revolutionary heat-resistant shells—the first amniotic eggs—allowing them to reproduce on land, they faced a new set of rivals: massive arthropods. Football-sized spiders and car-sized millipedes like Arthropleura ruled the Carboniferous swamps. A battle for dominance ensued. But a dramatic shift in Earth's atmosphere, a decrease in oxygen levels after massive wildfires, spelled doom for the giant bugs. This cleared the way for our resilient reptilian ancestors, like Petrolacosaurus, to thrive and inherit a changed world, setting the stage for the age of reptiles and the eventual rise of mammals. #Evolution #Hynerpeton #Devonian #Carboniferous #Paleontology #Prehistoric #DeepHistory #OriginOfLife #Amphibian #Reptile #Arthropleura #Science #Nature #Documentary.#reels #trending #prehistoric #viral #jurassic

Travel back 360 million years to the Devonian period, and you’ll find an ocean ruled by fish. And one monster above all. The old sea giants were gone. In their place rose Dunkleosteus. An armored predator that evolved from small, jawless ancestors into a 10-meter, multi-ton killing machine. Its body was a tank. Its jaws were living blades of bone, snapping shut with terrifying force. One of its favorite targets was the ammonite. Fast. Agile. Slippery. They could jet through the water and change direction instantly, dodging attack after attack, almost toying with the young hunter. But the ocean doesn’t reward frustration. It rewards patience. After missing from the sides again and again, Dunkleosteus changes tactics. It sinks lower. Waits. Then launches upward in a sudden ambush from below. This time, it connects. The ammonite is caught. And this time… it isn’t lucky. Follow for more moments from Earth’s most dangerous oceans. #devonian #dunkleosteus #prehistoriclife #ancientoceans #reels explorepage usa

A very unique find (I’ve never seen one before) from a Devonian deposit in SW Ontario, Canada. 350 million years ago, early sharks competed against plate-covered super predators called Placoderms. It's just one part of the amazing story of sharks. A story older than trees and the rings of Saturn. Our latest episode of #TheAncients explores what paleontologists currently know about these first sharks. How they rose to enjoy a golden age long before the dinosaurs and survived several of the Earth's mass extinction events. 🎧 The First Sharks 🎙 Professor John Long Listen wherever you get your podcasts! ---- Partially reconstructed Dunkelosteus skull at Cleveland Museum of Natural History - James St. John / CC BY 2.0 Dunkelosteus Palaeoartistic reconstruction - Hugo Salais / CC BY 4.0 Doliodus early Devonian shark life reconstruction - ДиБгд / CC BY-SA 4.0 Ctenacanthus concinnus life reconstruction - Gasmasque / CC BY-SA 4.0 Glikmanius occidentalis life reconstruction - Dmitry Bogdanov / CC BY 3.0 #devonian #sharks #placoderm #podcast #interview #ancientsharks
