It’s called glass child syndrome and it’s something we didn’t see at first. We had always tried so hard to make sure Jack felt included and supported that our child without the disability began to feel excluded. We were so focused on meeting the loudest needs that the quiet ones learned to wait. Glass child syndrome is when a child learns to be quiet, adaptable, and “easy” because the louder needs in the family take up most of the space. It’s not because they’re fragile, but because they’re often looked through instead of at. My daughter loves her brother fiercely. She understands more than an 11 year old ever should. She waits. She adjusts. She rarely complains. And sometimes, in all of that understanding, she feels invisible. If you know a family raising a child with a disability, here’s how you can help siblings feel seen: 1. Ask them how they are doing and listen without rushing or redirecting the conversation. 2. Use their name often and speak directly to them, not around them. 3. Celebrate their interests, strengths, and milestones, even when they seem small. 4. Spend one on one time with them that isn’t centered on their sibling’s needs. 5. Validate their feelings, including the hard ones, without guilt or comparison. 6. Remind them out loud that their needs matter too. #siblings #disabilityawareness #parentlife #strength #glasschildren

Werbung/Advertisement - Sometimes it feels like you’re the only one out there. Like you’re carrying this whole life on your own shoulders. But the truth is—somewhere, someone else is standing in the very same place you are. Every one of us has our own story, our own worries, our own battles. Yet what we often forget is that we were never meant to do this alone. We are meant to find each other. To connect. To share. To laugh. To cry. So let’s reach out. Let’s carry each other and celebrate our uniqueness together! It’s time. Also lasst uns aufeinander zugehen. Lasst uns einander tragen und gemeinsam unsere Einzigartigkeit feiern. Es ist Zeit! #disability #disabilityawareness #diversityandinclusion #disabilityinclusion #diversity

This might come as a huge shocker. But in my experience, Kids look because they’re curious, not cruel. When you whisper “don’t look,” it teaches them that disability is something embarrassing or wrong, something to be hidden instead of understood. If you shush them from asking questions, or turn their faces away from us, it makes them think that we are bad. That we shouldn’t be talked to. I’d much rather you teach them to say hi and smile, or let them ask questions. Or simply tell them, “People move, talk, and live in lots of different ways.” Teach them to be respectful. Normalize disabilities. Keep in mind, don’t let your kids just death stare at us. What I mean is it’s ok if they look and then smile and nod. But don’t just let your kids stare for ages at us. That is super uncomfortable. A simple moment of curiosity can become a moment of normalizing disability, instead of reinforcing shame. I promise it’s okay if your kids are curious. What hurts more is when kids mock us. I had a little girl come and ask a lot of questions about why I use a wheelchair. She left understanding it and realized it is just a different way to get around! Thank you to parents who continue to learn how to teach kids about disabilities. Hopefully this helps! Another side note- there’s a big difference when a kid does it vs adults. Some people don’t even like kids to stare. It’s different for everyone.personally I don’t mind it, as long as the kid is young and follows it up with a smile or wave! Keep in mind, I don’t speak for everyone. #disabilityawareness #wheelchair #inclusion fyp

When Hadley was born, doctors told us to prepare for a child who may never walk, crawl, or be able to take care of herself. They told us to lower our expectations and adjust to a very different future. Thankfully, we didn’t listen. We never put limits on her — and she continues to amaze us. #wheelchair #wheelchairlife #wheelchairgirl #osteogenesisimperfecta #DifferentNotLess #unbreakable #disabilityawareness

Don't touch someone's mobility aid without their express consent!! You'd think this might be common sense but it happens way too often. Please share this with someone who can relate or needs to hear this! As disabled people we get asked all sorts of questions that people would never dare to ask a non-disabled person, but unfortunately it doesn't stop at questions. What other behaviours have you seen towards disabled people that people would never do to a non-disabled person. Let me know in the comments. You wouldn't move someone's personal belongings away from them, like a handbag, tablet or phone, without asking. They are often expensive & personal items we don't want others to touch. So don't move someone's mobility aid out of the way without asking, even if they aren't directly using it. It's necessary for a mobility aid to be available to it's user whenever they need it and they are very expensive pieces of kit and it can be devastating if they get lost or damaged because someone has moved it. I've had a walking stick taken off me whilst I was using it and used by someone as a microphone & air guitar before and it's just not okay! You wouldn't lean on someone mid conversation especially if it's your first meeting. It would be a very uncomfortable situation. So please don't lean on someone's mobility aid without asking. This one happens to me all the time and it's very uncomfortable. It may cause pain or discomfort to the user or end up accidentally adjusting carefully chosen settings. Please treat people's mobility aids as extension of their bodies. You wouldn't move someone out of the way if you wanted to get past. You would probably either wait or simply say 'sorry, excuse me'. So don't try and move a wheelchair user just because their chair has wheels. It's a very scary experience and can cause injury. Just take the 2 seconds to ask, like you would for anyone else. #DisabilityAwareness #DisabilityEducation #MobilityAid

Found this video from last month where Madilynn is taking small but confident steps. It’s wild how much progress can show up in just a month when you’re really paying attention. Back then, every step took so much focus — slow, intentional, and with some wild arms helping her balance. And even now, that effort is still there. But what’s changed is her confidence. She’s trusting her body more, attempting more steps, and even catching herself instead of falling into one of us right away. When you’re disabled, learning to walk doesn’t follow a typical timeline, and that’s okay. Progress isn’t measured in speed or distance — it’s measured in courage, consistency, and the willingness to keep trying. Watching her grow into her independence, inch by inch, is something we’ll never stop celebrating. 💛 #sca5 #learningtowalk #spinocerebellarataxia #disabilityawareness #ataxiaawareness
