Despite being one of the 3 carbon-negative countries, Surinamese children suffer from droughts, water scarcity & long-term school closures. As an #EUClimatePact Ambassador, my duty is not just to represent the Pact and its goals, but also to engage in honest reflection — to ask difficult questions, and to advocate for a climate transition that is not only fast, but fair, inclusive, and just. We often hear about the EU’s remarkable leadership in climate policy, the commitment to becoming carbon neutral by 2050, the incredible investments in renewable energy, and the regulations that are shaping the global conversation. These are significant achievements but we tend to forget that the climate crisis is not only a crisis of emissions, but a crisis that reveals all the structural injustices we have inherited and, far too often, continue to perpetuate. Colonialism, racism, extractivism — these are not relics of the past; they are embedded in the very foundation of how we approach energy, land, and resources today. And so, if in our rush to become carbon neutral, we continue to displace local and Indigenous communities, like in Congo, in Bolivia, in the Philippines or even in Molina de Segura, if we turn a blind eye to biodiversity loss and the erosion of human and nature’s rights, then we have understood what really took us here in first place. The climate crisis demands more than technological solutions; it demands a rethinking of our relationship with people, with nature, and with power. So we must ensure that the green transition does not become a new chapter in an old story of extraction and exclusion. The EU and any western country must learn the power of self-reflection and self-criticism, as we all must, not to dwell in guilt, but to evolve. To grow, to ensure we do not repeat the mistakes of the past under the illusion of progress or a greener future. Because true climate leadership is not about how fast we build the future — it’s about how justly we do it. Deeply grateful with the @ep_eye team for inviting me to speak at the Parliament about climate justice in front of hundreds of future leaders, it was an honor to share the space with @lena.ats and Chief Tau Metuktire @planeteamazone, and an even greater honor to receive such thoughtful and encouraging words from many of you afterward.

I’ve had many cappuccinos (with soy 😜) in my life, but I never thought I would share one, calmly, with the President of the @europeancommission Commission, @ursulavonderleyen , in Rome during her visit as the @epp candidate. What a breakfast! Her presence was marked by a clear vision and commitment to a strong and united Europe. During our talk, von der Leyen discussed her plans and ideas for the future of the European Union, providing valuable insights to my many questions. Obviously, 30 minutes were not enough to cover everything I had in mind, but my ideas are now much clearer. I feel very fortunate that, five years ago, the European Green Deal opened the doors to the Commission’s most ambitious plans ever. Completing the task is up to us and our choices. While there are many pressing matters Europe is facing at the moment, we must not forget that the climate crisis is the biggest threat to human civilization today. That’s why, as a @euclimatepactambassadors , I will keep working hard to convey all the insights I can! Durante la nostra conversazione, von der Leyen ha discusso i suoi piani e le sue idee per il futuro dell'Unione Europea, fornendo preziosi spunti alle mie numerose domande. Ovviamente, 30 minuti non sono stati sufficienti per coprire tutto ciò che avevo in mente, ma ora le mie idee sono molto più chiare. Mi sento molto fortunato che, cinque anni fa, il Green Deal europeo abbia aperto le porte ai piani più ambiziosi della Commissione. Portare a termine il compito spetta a noi e alle nostre scelte. At the same time we had the chance to inspect several of our new planting spots in Drafi and we were happy to see that after a long and hot summer, due to our intense efforts, we have reached up to 100% survival rate in many cases.
