Edvard Munch’s death mask ⚰️💀 This year marks the 80th anniversary of Munch’s passing. Soon after his death, a death mask was created, preserving his facial features in his final moments. 🪦 This post-mortem tradition dates back to pre-Christian times, with both the Egyptians and Romans creating masks of prominent individuals. In recent times, death masks were made for renowned writers, composers, and artists, including Munch. The belief was that by capturing their face at the moment of death, one could eternally preserve their spirituality and wisdom. Munch’s death mask was created by a local plaster company in Oslo, with the involvement of an anatomy professor and a sculptor. Today, it rests quietly in the archives of MUNCH. #MUNCH #EdvardMunch #ArtHistory

Final days to experience "Northern Lights" at Fondation Beyeler! Hurry up! This Sunday, May 25, 2025, marks the closing of the mesmerizing exhibition "Northern Lights" at the Fondation Beyeler. Curated by Dr. Ulf Küster, this unique exhibition brings together 74 landscape masterpieces from Scandinavian and Canadian artists, created between 1888 and 1937. The exhibition delves into the profound inspiration artists drew from the boreal forests, capturing the ethereal light of endless summer days, the mystique of long winter nights, and the awe-inspiring aurora borealis. Notable works include works by Hilma af Klint, Edvard Munch, Emily Carr, and Tom Thomson, each portraying the northern landscapes' spiritual and emotional resonance, like Tom Thomson's work "Northern River", 1915, a distinctive interplay of light and shadow, that becomes more colourful and vivid upon closer inspection. Complementing the exhibition is "Boreal Dreams", a digital installation by contemporary Danish artist Jakob Kudsk Steensen. This immersive work explores the impacts of climate change on boreal ecosystems through virtual landscapes crafted from scientific data and gaming technology. Don't miss this extraordinary journey through northern landscapes and artistic interpretations and get your tickets now online or directly on site. “Northern Lights” is on display until Sunday, May 25, 2025, 6 pm. #FondationBeyeler #BeyelerNorthernLights #TomThomson #Art Credits: Tom Thomson, Nördlicher Fluss, 1915, Öl auf Leinwand, 115,1 x 102 cm, National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, erworben 1915, Foto: NGC Tom Thomson, Pine Island, Georgian Bay, 1914–1916, National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa, Vermächtnis Dr. J.M. Edvard Munch encountered death at an early age. His mother passed away when he was just six, and his sister followed a few years later. The death of his father in 1889 sent him into a profound crisis. Against this backdrop, it is unsurprising that themes of death, fear, and grief repeatedly surfaced in Munch's work. Reflecting on his traumatic childhood, Munch later wrote: “My home was the home of illness and death. I have never gotten over the calamity there. It has also influenced my art.”The Child and Death is one of Munch’s most powerful explorations of dying and grief. It depicts a young girl looking outward, her hands covering her ears, while her deceased mother lies in the background. True to Munch's style, the focus is not on the deceased but on the emotional state of the living—in this case, the girl's silent terror. Unlike the figure in The Scream, who expresses anguish with a cry, this child is frozen in fear, unable to vocalize her pain.

🖌️ Take a closer look and you’ll see that these aren’t just ordinary brushstrokes. Artist @eliza_reinhardt (Eliza Reinhardt) creates large-scale replicas of her favorite works from the everyday things you can find in your closet. From socks to t-shirts to sheets, she uses textiles to mimic the textures of a traditional painting. “I create the same movements and shapes that I would with a stroke of paint, just with a sock or a t-shirt,” says Eliza. “I really see paintings in their shapes and I very easily can kind of break down paintings into strokes that then I can create out of fabric.” With this unique approach to fine art, she’s hoping to make it easier to engage with the paintings she holds close to her heart. “I hope that the way that I create work breaks down the barrier of exclusivity—allowing folks to recognize objects or search for the dog, notice how one sock creates an eyebrow or that the glisten on the lip is created by a packing peanut!” 🖼️ Pictured here: Edvard Munch, Dog’s Head (1942) Photo © Munchmuseet @munchmuseum Music by Scott Dugdale #FiberArt #FineArt #OilPainting #MixedMedia
